Pokémon: Advanced Battle is the eighth season of Pokémon and the third part of Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire, a Japanese anime television series known in Japan as Pocket Monsters: Advanced Generation (ポケットモンスター アドバンスジェネレーション, Poketto Monsutā Adobansu Jenerēshon).. It originally aired in Japan from September 9, 2004 to September 29, 2005 on TV Tokyo, and in the United States from September 17, 2005 to July 8, 2006 on Kids' WB.

Season chronology

The first 38 episodes of the season are set in the fictional Hoenn region, and follows the adventures of the ten-year-old Pokémon trainer Ash Ketchum, and his electric mouse partner Pikachu as they collect Gym Badges so they can compete in the Hoenn League competition. Along the way, they are joined by Brock, the leader of the Pewter City Gym, and the Pokémon coordinator May and her brother, Max, as May competes in Pokémon Contests with the aim of earning Ribbons so she can enter the Hoenn Grand Festival. In episodes 39 to 52 of the season Ash returns to the Kanto region to compete in the Battle Frontier by earning Frontier Symbols from Frontier Brains, while May continues competing to earn Contest Ribbons so she can enter the Kanto Grand Festival.

The episodes were directed by Masamitsu Hidaka and produced by the animation studio OLM.

The Japanese opening songs are "Challenger!!" (チャレンジャー!!, Charenjā!!) by Rika Matsumoto for 13 episodes, "Pokemon Symphonic Medley" (ポケモンシンフォニック メドレー, Pokémon Shinfonikku Medorē) by the Pokémon Symphonic Orchestra (Pokémon Choir) for 29 episodes, and "Battle Frontier (Japanese song)" (バトルフロンツア, Batoru Furontia) by Akina Takaya for 11 episodes. The ending songs are "Smile" (スマイル, Sumairu) by Toshiko Ezaki for 6 episodes, "GLORY DAY 〜That Shining Day〜" (GLORY DAY 〜輝くその日〜, GLORY DAY 〜Kagayaku Sono Hi〜) by GARDEN for 35 episodes, and "Pokemon Counting Song" (ポケモンかぞえうた, Pokémon Kazoe Uta) by Akiko Kanazawa for 11 episodes. The English opening song is "Unbeatable" by David Rolfe, with a shortened version used in the end credits.

The series was released on 10 DVD volumes by Viz Media.[1], who would later release Pokémon: Advanced Battle – The Complete Collection on DVD on June 12, 2018.

This causes him to lose his first Pokémon, Girafarig, in a single attack. Will Morrison be able to fight back against Ash?

Morrison sends out Growlithe but is easily defeated by Corphish. Ash taunts Morrison for not battling with his full heart in the game, causing Morrison snaps out of his dilemma and sends out Swampert, who draws with Corphish after using Focus Punch against Corphish's Crabhammer. Morrison then sends out Steelix and Ash sends out Pikachu and Torkoal, who both get defeated. Ash sends out Grovyle next who beats Steelix, and Morrison then sends out Gligar who beats Grovyle after a heated match with a Guillotine. Ash then sends out Swellow who defeats Gligar with its powerful Aerial Ace, only to be defeated by Morrison's Metang, leaving Ash down to his Glalie, who keeps using Ice Beam but it keeps getting reversed by Psychic. Finally after Ice Beam is reversed by Psychic, Glalie uses an Icy Wind to blow it back and beat Metang, handing Ash victory over Morrison. However, Ash learns he will be facing Tyson in the next round. Tyson sends out Sceptile and Ash sends out Glalie as the battle unfolds.

Ash's Glalie and Tyson's Sceptile are both knocked out, so Ash sends out Torkoal and Tyson sends out Shiftry, who keeps dodging Flamethrower until Torkoal finally hits one and beats it. Tyson then uses Hariyama, who blocks Flamethrower with an Arm Thrust. Brock reveals that Hariyama has a Thick Fat that makes Fire and Ice Type attack do less than half the damage they usually would, giving Hariyama the advantage over Ash's Torkoal and Corphish. Ash then sends in Swellow, in which Hariyama catches Swellow by the beak in the midst of a Quick Attack, but Swellow manages to emerge victorious against Hariyama and Tyson's Donphan. Tyson then sends in Metagross who beats Swellow after hitting it with a Hyper Beam, but not without leaving Ash an opening by leaving a scratch on Metagross via a Quick Attack for Ash to focus on. Ash sends in Grovyle next, who uses Bullet Seed on the scratch making it deeper. Grovyle goes for Leaf Blade but gets hit with Meteor Mash and loses. Ash's last Pokémon is Pikachu, who uses Iron Tail and then Thunder on the scratch and knocks out Metagross. Tyson's last Pokémon is Meowth who is revealed to know Thunderbolt and uses it to block Pikachu's electric attacks. Pikachu and Meowth hit Iron Tails on each other and Pikachu collapses. Tyson wins the match and goes on to win the rest of the matches and the Hoenn League championship.

When Team Rocket fools a King Onix, some Geodude, Graveler and Golem into believing that Ash wants to capture them, it spells disaster for Ash, Brock, May and Max as one by one, they and their Pokémon are captured and imprisoned by the Rock Pokémon. Ash, unwilling to let his friends take the blame and realizing he can't make the Rock Pokémon see sense, asks King Onix if there is a way he can convince him. King Onix challenges Ash to a battle, in a deal that if he is able to defeat him all the Rock Pokémon will believe what Ash is saying. Having gotten a chance to free his friends and their Pokémon, Ash chooses Grovyle to battle against Onix.
