The station was planned to be built as part of the second phase of reinstatement of the Clonsilla-Navan line but was deferred due to the reduction in the Exchequer capital investment programme.[1] The plans expected Kilmessan to be the second station on the Phase 2 section of the route. The proposed route includes 34km of railway line, with stations located at Dunshaughlin, Kilmessan, Navan town centre and a further station proposed for the northern edge of Navan.
