The station originally signed on the air July 11, 1947, with 250 W power,[1] from studios inside the Hotel Besse on East 4th Street. The station was owned by Pittsburg Publishing Co., a part of Stauffer Communications, the same company that owned the city's two newspapers, the Pittsburg Sun (morning) and Pittsburg Daily Headlight (evening).[2]
