Jonathan McHugh

Jonathan McHugh is a documentary film director, film producer and music supervisor. For the last eight years he has been an independent film and TV producer and music supervisor, specializing in creating musical-based content.

Career

McHugh was born in Staten Island, New York and later, attended Tulane University, where he worked at WTUL-FM.

Early career

He worked in radio syndication in the mid '80s in New York, and then McHugh moved to Los Angeles to work in promotion at De Laurentiis Entertainment Group(1987). In 1988, he worked at A & M Records in New York, and then at Elektra Records(1990-1993). In 1994 he went back to A & M Records where he worked on the soundtracks for "S.F.W."[1] and "Fast Track to Nowhere"[2] and co-produced the soundtrack to "Don Juan deMarco,"[3] additionally producing the soundtrack to the cult classic film "Empire Records."[4]

Film promotion

In 1996 he was hired at New Line Cinema in the soundtrack department, where he produced soundtracks including "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery,"[5] "Wedding Singer[6]" "Rush Hour"(1998 film)[7], "Blade,"[8] "Money Talks".[9]

Soundtrack & producing

In 1999 he co-created Zomba Films at Jive/Sony. While there, McHugh wrote and produced the film "Snoop Dogg's Hood of Horror"[10] and co-produced the Paramount film "Crossroads"[11] starring Brittany Spears, which grossed over $60 million in the box office. In 2001 he became Los Angeles Chapter President at the Recording Academy, served as a national Trustee, and spent 5 years on the National TV Committee consulting on CBS Broadcasts.

In 2008, McHugh produced Lionsgate's "Repo! The Genetic Opera"[12] starring Paul Sorvino and Sarah Brightman, Lifetime's "Flying By,"[13] starring Billy Ray Cyrus, and the Discovery TV series "Battleground Earth: Ludacris vs. Tommy Lee."[14]

In 2009, McHugh was hired at Island-Def Jam/Universal Music Group[15]. There he co-produced the film "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never"[16].

Independence Directing & Music Supervision

Since 2011, McHugh has become an independent director, producer, and music supervisor. He co-produced the documentary "Janis: Little Girl Blue"[17] and the documentary "We Are X,"[18] produced "Man in the Camo Jacket"[19], and has music supervised the acclaimed TV Shows "Jett"[20] and "Sun Records,"[21] and the film Lionsgate's "Blindspotting."[22] He is currently producing the documentary film "City of Ali"[23] which is about Muhammad Ali's relationship with his hometown Louisville, Kentucky. The first two documentary films he directed will be released: "Cosplay Universe"[24] and "Long Live Rock... Celebrate the Chaos"[25]

McHugh is an Adjunct Professor at Kogod School of Business at American University in Washington, D.C., teaching the business of visual media, as well as mentoring students. He is founding member and Secretary of the Guild of Music Supervisors[26], and a member of the Documentary Film Committee at the Producers Guild. He is co-chair of the T.J. Martell Tennis Tournament, benefitting pediatric cancer research.
