20 Class D62s were rebuilt from the earlier Class D52, which had a 2-8-2 wheel arrangement.[1] Following the launch of the Class D62, other 2-8-2 locomotives (Class D50 and Class D51) were also converted to 2-8-4, becoming Class D60 and Class D61, respectively. They were numbered D62 1-D62 20 (formerly D52 368/D52 448/D52 401/D52 450/D52 449/D52 42/D52 344/D52 336/D52 94/D52 132/D52 337/D52 397/D52 211/D52 334/D52 377/D52 338/D52 343/D52 360/D52 339/D52 462) were renumbered D62 1-D62 20 between 1950 and 1951 rebuilt by the JNR Hamamatsu Works in 1950 and 1951 they were retired in 1966 . And all were retired and cut up for scrap in 1966 . None of the D62 2-8-4 Berkshires were preserved .

Preservation

No examples of the class have been preserved.[2]

The D62 is the model upon which the Transformers character Astrotrain is based.[3]

gollark: What's this in response to?
gollark: So my search thing seems to be handling the tens of megabytes of slowly downloading esolangs.org data somewhat well, in that queries which don't have any results in it run fine. On the other hand, I didn't add any pagination and it would be quite hard to given how the search algorithm works, so looking for stuff like "the" is slow. And the search algorithm is terrible at looking up specific phrases.
gollark: Just text, formatting and a little metadata (in some insane XML format) - no images, talk pages, user pages, that sort of thing.
gollark: This is without images and whatnot.
gollark: Wikipedia is "only" 15GB compressed, but the inverted index data structure this uses for search is biiiiig.
