It is located in the Ostrobothnia region. The municipality has a population of 4,576 (31 January 2019)[2] and covers an area of 356.91 square kilometres (137.80 sq mi) of which 2.79 km2 (1.08 sq mi) is water.[1] The population density is 12.92 inhabitants per square kilometre (33.5/sq mi).

The municipality is unilingually Finnish.

There are 13.000 hectares of cultivated fields.[6]
