Club career

Born in San Sebastián, Gipuzkoa, Ruiz de Galarreta joined Athletic Bilbao's youth system in 2003, aged 10. On 14 December 2011, while still a junior, he made his debut with the first team, coming on as a substitute for Borja Ekiza in the 88th minute of a 2–4 away loss against Paris Saint-Germain F.C. in that season's UEFA Europa League;[1] during his first year, however, he was almost exclusively played with the reserves in Segunda División B.

On 2 August 2012, Ruiz de Galarreta made his second appearance for the main squad, again in the Europa League but now against NK Slaven Belupo (27 minutes played, 3–1 home win).[2] He played his first La Liga game on the 19th of the same month, replacing Gaizka Toquero at half-time of an eventual 3–5 home defeat to Real Betis.[3]

During a match with the B-side against Lleida Esportiu on 21 October 2012, Ruiz de Galarreta ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament on his left knee, being sidelined for the remainder of the campaign.[4][5] For 2013–14 he was loaned to CD Mirandés of Segunda División,[6] where in a home game against CD Numancia, on 27 October, he suffered the same injury.[7]

The following years, Ruiz de Galarreta played with Real Zaragoza[8] and CD Leganés on loan,[9] helping the latter club achieve a first-ever promotion to the top flight in 2016. He continued to compete in the second division subsequently, representing Numancia,[10] FC Barcelona B and UD Las Palmas.[11]

On 2 September 2019, Ruiz de Galarreta signed a four-year contract with RCD Mallorca in the top tier, and remained on loan at Las Palmas for the upcoming season.[12]

International career

Ruiz de Galarreta started representing Spain at under-17 level, appearing in friendlies against Portugal, Faroe Islands and Romania. He also played for the under-18s and the under-19s.

gollark: I don't think a centrally planned system would work *better*.
gollark: I roughly agree with that. Though competence is hard to measure, so people tend to fall back to bad metrics for it.
gollark: Yes, since if you try and talk about nuance or tradeoffs that's interpreted as "you do not agree and therefore must be part of the outgroup". Sometimes.
gollark: There are arguments both ways. On the one hand you're trying to make sure that the people you have match the population, but on the other you're going about hiring people based on factors other than how well they can do the job (though that was... probably going to happen anyway, considering), and people may worry that they got in only because of being some race/gender.
gollark: Also, more than that, political polarization generally.
