Hypersonic Hyperphonic

Hypersonic Hyperphonic is the second studio album by Tinfed, released on December 3, 1996 by Re-Constriction Records.[1] Option described the album as "walk[ing] the tightrope between discordant rock and synthcore."[2]

Critical Reception

Larry Miles of Black Monday called Hypersonic Hyperphonic one of the best alternative albums the critic had heard that year and compared the music favorably to Filter and Cop Shoot Cop, saying "what's most interesting is that Tinfed have a great appreciation for, and are influenced by, trip-hop, dub, trance, techno and jungle."[3] Sonic Boom was also warm in its reception towards the album, noting that "Tinfed is one of those bands who would fit perfectly on tour with the likes of God Lives Underwater, Stabbing Westward, Filter & Gravity Kills which means they should do rather well with the current crossover audience."[4]

Aiding & Abetting gave the album a more mixed review, praising the production but criticizing the songwriting and musicianship.[5] Both critics at Fabryka Music Magazine gave it a negative review, with Marco Gariboldi saying "the album immediately shows its weaknesses: singing sounds problematic and a certain monotony in drums and guitars is what pervades the tracks with boredom."[6] Scott Hefflon of Lollipop Magazine criticized the band's new direction and said "it's truly up to the individual to decide whether Hypersonic Hyperphonic is a mish-mash of Cop Shoot Cop/Nine Inch Nails hybrid nightmares and we-really-like-Killing-Joke throwaways, or an album that pushes the limitations of melody and the usual alignment of rhythm and percussion."[7]
