Hugh Waddell (rugby league)

Hugh Waddell (13 November 1958 – 1 November 2019) was a Scottish professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s at representative level for Great Britain, England and Scotland, and at club level for Blackpool Borough (c. 1984), Oldham (c. 1986–87…1988–89), Leeds (Heritage № 1190) (c. 1988–89…1989–90), Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles (1989), Sheffield Eagles (c. 1989–90…1992–93), Wakefield Trinity (Heritage № 1043) (1993–94), Egremont Rangers (c. 1995), South Wales (1996), Rochdale Hornets, Swinton Lions, Carlisle, Barrow (c. 1998), and Border Eagles (c. 1998), as a prop, or second-row.[1][4]

Playing career

"Hugh Waddell – Prop. Formerly a soccer player in Burton-on-Trent, Waddell first played League for Blackpool Borough, and won England Honours in 1984. Transferred to Oldham, and débuted for GB in 1988, starring in the Lions’ third Test victory over Australia. Signed for Leeds, then Sheffield. Ernest Ward Memorial Trophy Winner in 1988, 5 Test caps."[6]

Hugh Waddell won caps for England while at Blackpool Borough in 1984 against Wales,[2] won caps for Scotland, and won caps for Great Britain while at Oldham in 1988 against France (2 matches), Australia, and New Zealand, and while at Leeds in 1989 against France.[3]

Hugh Waddell was the only player from the second division selected to go on the 1988 Great Britain Lions tour.

Hugh Waddell played right-prop, i.e. number 10, (replaced by interchange/substitute Sam Backo) in Leeds' 33-12 victory over Castleford in the 1988 Yorkshire County Cup Final during the 1988–89 season at Elland Road, Leeds on Sunday 16 October 1988.
