Holy Cross School (Salem, India)

Holy Cross School (also known as Holy Cross Matriculation Higher Secondary School) is a private, Catholic primary, secondary and higher secondary school for boys in Salem, Tamil Nadu, India. It was established in 1963 by the Brothers of Holy Cross.

Curriculum

The school introduced language proficiency classes to enhance the competency of students in English. These classes comprise a set of modules such as phonetics, grammar, communication and comprehension. The progress of the students is evaluated by a process of oral and written examinations which are designed to engage the qualitative and quantitative improvement. In April, summer coaching classes are conducted to help the students who fail to achieve the stipulated standard in English proficiency.

Extracurricular activities

The school holds an Annual Sports Meet every year and hosted southern region zonal sports meet in its past. It has a range of clubs which students can opt for two clubs in an academic year. These include the computer club, ECCO club, cconomics club, English Literary Association, history and geography club, Interact club, Junior Jaycee, language club, maths club, nature club, science club, sports and health club, philately club, and Quiz club.

Other activities include an army and air wing National Cadet Corps, Junior Red Cross, National Service Scheme, Green Movement, Red Ribbon, a science exhibition and trekking.

Kalothsav

A Kalothsav event

The school has a cultural festival, known as Kalothsav. In keeping with the tradition of Holy Cross as path breakers and pioneers, Kalothsav, the inter-school cultural competitions, came into existent three decades ago to provide avenues to the student fraternity of Salem to showcase their talents and capabilities.

Kalothsav encompasses three segments; Kalothsav Kids for lower and upper kindergarten students, Kalothsav Junior for primary level students, and Kalothsav Senior for secondary and higher level students. The inter-school winners showcase their skills to the local community via the Kalothsav Grand Nights.

Facilities

The school has a range of facilities including two audio visual labs, a computer lab and classrooms with notification boards and an announcement speaker. There are two language laboratories with computers and an audio-visual display, physics and chemistry laboratory, a biology lab with preserved specimens and a canteen. It also has a hostel for students with beds, study tables, lockers and a separate kitchen with dining area.

Its sports facilities include an outdoor basketball court with floodlights and a scoreboard, three indoor ball badminton courts with synthetic floors, a separate track with cricket nets, separate football and volleyball courts, a separate bay built for skating, long jump and a gymnasium.
