Early life

Piker was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and raised in Istanbul, Turkey. Piker was raised Muslim and is of Turkish descent. Growing up, Piker describes himself as an "outcast" who questioned the dogma he learned in school. Piker moved to America and attended the University of Miami for two semesters, earning a 2.9 GPA. His parents then forced him to transfer to Rutgers University, where he graduated Cum Laude with a dual degree in Political Science and Communications. At Rutgers, he was a member of the Theta Delta Chi fraternity.[4]

Career

In 2013, during the spring break of his senior year of college, Piker interned at The Young Turks (TYT), his uncle Cenk Uygur's network. After graduating, he got a job in the sales department. However, Piker requested to be put on camera as a fill-in, which he was and became a host and producer at TYT.[4]

Later, Piker created the show The Breakdown, which aired on Facebook[5][6] and was nominated for "Best Web Series" category at the 10th Shorty Awards.[7] He also wrote articles for The Huffington Post.[8][9] In 2019, Piker created a new series called Agitprop with Hasan Piker at TYT.[10]

In January, 2020, in a Twitch stream, Piker announced his departure from The Young Turks. He is now an active left-wing political streamer on Twitch[11] and appears in political mainstream media and podcasts.[12][13][2] He also does gameplay and commentary of various games on his stream.[1] He posts highlights of his political and gameplay Twitch streams on his YouTube channel.[14][15]

Controversies

In August 2019, during a Twitch stream, Piker criticized Member of Congress Dan Crenshaw for his continued opposition in the United States House of Representatives to stop sending arms to Saudi Arabia. Piker questioned why Crenshaw would be opposed and made vulgar comments on how he lost his eye while serving.[16][17] Twitch subsequently banned him for a week for his comments.[18][19]

Personal life

Piker is the nephew of Cenk Uygur, creator of The Young Turks. He dated popular adult actress, Janice Griffith in 2018.[20][21]
