History
The building was commissioned to replace an earlier town hall used by the Metropolitan Borough of Hammersmith in Hammersmith Broadway.[1] The current building, which was designed by Ernest Berry Webber, was completed in 1939.[1] It suffered bomb damage during the Blitz in 1940 and 1944, but was repaired in time for the victory celebrations in 1945. [2]The foyer was redecorated with murals of riverside scenes by Alfred Daniels and John Titcheli in 1956.[3]
The town hall was transferred to the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham in 1965.[1] A six-storey extension was completed in 1975.[1] In November 2019 work began to demolish the extension with a view to creating a civic campus with a public square, a cinema and new residential space.[4][5] The new civic campus was designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners.[6] It is due to reopen in 2023.[2]
