GMC Hummer EV

The GMC Hummer EV is an upcoming off-road electric vehicle series produced by General Motors. The new Hummer EV will be available in two variants, an SUV and a truck (dubbed "SUT"). The vehicles were introduced through a series of teasers on January 30, 2020, with the full market launch during the Super Bowl LIV on February 2, 2020. The official release, which was scheduled for May 20, 2020, was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic and will be revealed in the fall of 2020.[1] [2] The truck variant is expected to go on sale in late 2021.[3]

Overview

The Hummer series was marketed and sold by GM from 1992 to 2010 as rugged, heavy-duty SUVs based on the Humvee during their production cycles. Off-road capabilities, high fuel consumption, and low gas mileage were three traits commonly associated with the brand.[4] Production of the Hummer was eventually discontinued in 2009 due to rising fuel costs that led to dwindling demands, but GM retained the intellectual property rights for the Hummer name after its discontinuation.[5] Leveraging on Hummer's brand recognition and GM's distribution network, the re-launched Hummer will be an environmentally friendly electric vehicle (EV) and GM's foray into the nascent EV truck market.[6] The vehicle will be marketed and sold through GMC dealerships.

The Hummer EV is reported to have 1,000 hp (746 kW; 1,014 PS), generating 11,500 lb⋅ft (15,592 N⋅m) torque from three electric motors. There will be one-, two- and three-motor variants, and the truck will come in RWD and AWD configurations. GMC's figure corresponds to wheel torque (similarly to the second-generation Tesla Roadster), which is traditional motor torque multiplied through the transmission's drive ratio; this results in a motor torque figure of 715–834 lb⋅ft (969–1,131 N⋅m).[7][8] The vehicle is expected to be full-size like a GMC Sierra[9] and will cover 0–60 miles per hour (0–97 km/h) in 3 seconds.[6]

GM has confirmed that there would be two variants of the Hummer EV; a truck, the "Hummer EV SUT" (the variant teased during the Super Bowl), and an SUV, the "Hummer EV SUV." [10] Both variants have a removable targa top (like the Jeep Wrangler) that can be stored in the frunk, and large, 35 inch tires.[11] Additionally, both variants extensively incorporate the old Hummer design language (particularly that of the Hummer H3 and H3T), with an upright windshield, boxy shape, and aggressive, squared fender flares, with included running boards.[12] Additionally, the SUT version has very large C-pillar "sails" in the back reminiscent of the Chevrolet Avalanche; but where the Avalanche added an external element to provide a slope to the back side of the C pillar, the Hummer's C pillar itself is angled back to meet the bed.[13] The SUT also looked to possibly include the retracting "midgate" rear window feature found in both the Avalanche and the Hummer H2.[14] Inside, the Hummers each have a big upright 15.0-inch touchscreen, 12.0-inch instrument cluster, beefy steering wheel, and huge gearshift - the styling of the interiors was described as "weatherproof," "butch" and similar to the Jeep Wrangler.[15] Air suspension will be available on higher trim models.

On July 29, 2020, GM unveiled a teaser video of the new Hummer twins, showcasing upcoming features such as "Adrenaline Mode," "Crab Mode," "Ultra Vision Cameras," the "Infinity Roof" with "modular sky panels," "super fast charging," and the next generation of SuperCruise.[16] Details on these features will be announced at the newly rescheduled Fall 2020 reveal date.

Marketing

On January 30, 2020, GM released three Quiet Revolution theme teasers of the Hummer EV. These teaser releases were followed up with the first marketing launch with Super Bowl ads on February 2, 2020 with LeBron James as the spokesperson.[17]

Production

The Hummer EV will be produced at GM's Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly plant in Michigan. Availability should begin in mid-2021. The company recently invested $2.2 billion in the plant for the production of electric vehicles.[3]
