Deer River Township is a township in Itasca County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 704 at the 2010 census.[3]

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 35.4 square miles (92 km2), of which 33.1 square miles (86 km2) is land and 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2), or 6.50%, is water.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 691 people, 246 households, and 193 families living in the township. The population density was 20.9 people per square mile (8.1/km2). There were 324 housing units at an average density of 9.8/sq mi (3.8/km2). The racial makeup of the township was 93.49% White, 3.76% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.14% from other races, and 2.17% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.16% of the population.

There were 246 households, out of which 32.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.1% were married couples living together, 5.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.5% were non-families. 18.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.81 and the average family size was 3.13.

In the township the population was spread out, with 28.5% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 22.7% from 25 to 44, 28.1% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 103.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.0 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $35,208, and the median income for a family was $42,813. Males had a median income of $32,386 versus $23,750 for females. The per capita income for the township was $15,836. About 9.2% of families and 14.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.9% of those under age 18 and 10.0% of those age 65 or over.
