A Dassault Group subsidiary headquartered in Vélizy-Villacoublay, France, Dassault Systèmes (abbreviated 3DS) develops software for 3D product design, simulation, manufacturing and more.

The second-largest software company in Europe, 3DS has 20,000 employees in 140 countries serving more than 250,000 customers[2].

A pioneer in computer-aided design that was spun off from Dassault Aviation, 3DS has expanded into a diverse range of software categories and industries. Established companies and startups use the company’s 3DEXPERIENCE platform to create, test and optimize consumer and business-to-business products and services.

History

3DS identifies five distinct periods in its history where its software solutions have helped people and business to innovate and contribute to human progress:

  • 1981-1989 – 3D Design: led by the launch of CATIA, parts and assemblies can now be designed in 3D.
  • 1989-1999 – 3D Digital Mock-Up (3D DMU): 3D parts can now be assembled to simulate a complete virtual mock-up, enabling the replacement of physical prototypes. When Boeing adopted 3D DMU for its 777 project, it marked the first time that an entire aircraft was created in 3D, without a physical mockup.
  • 1999-2012 – 3D Product Lifecycle Management (3D PLM): the entire lifecycle of a product’s development – from design to retirement – can now take place in 3D, enabling improved process management and product innovation
  • 2012-2020 – 3DEXPERIENCE: a digital platform now connects people, ideas, data and solutions to help companies create differentiated experience for their clients. 3DEXPERIENCE is 3DS’s response to the rise of today’s experience economy where consumers put greater value on a product’s usage than on the product itself. In 2012, 3DS rebranded itself as The 3DEXPERIENCE Company.
  • 2020-present – 3DEXPERIENCE from Things to Life: with the advent of virtual twins for people, the human body can now be modeled and tested as precisely, safely and effectively as products in traditional industry such as cars, buildings or airplanes.

Products & Brands

Before 2000, the company focused on 3D design software with CATIA and SOLIDWORKS. Over the next decade, new brands were launched: ENOVIA for product data management and collaboration; DELMIA for manufacturing and global operations; and SIMULIA for realistic simulation.

The company later added additional brands: EXALEAD (for information intelligence and search); NETVIBES (for business analytics); 3DEXCITE (for marketing); GEOVIA (for modeling the planet); BIOVIA (for modeling the biosphere); and MEDIDATA (for managing clinical trials)*.

3DEXPERIENCE platform

In 2012, 3DS launched a digital product innovation platform called the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. The strategy behind the platform is human industry experience: human (people-focused, multi-disciplinary collaboration); industry (specialized industry best practices); experience (what consumers value in today’s ‘experience economy’).

Users navigate the 3DEXPERIENCE platform via its interface called the Compass, which groups these brands or apps into four quadrants:

  1. 3D Modeling apps: create and visualize products and experiences
  2. Simulation apps: simulate and test the possible business solutions in the virtual world
  3. Information Intelligence apps: gather and gain insight from data to optimize product development
  4. Social & Collaborative apps: manage data and collaborate with stakeholders in and outside the company

The 3DEXPERIENCE platform is available on premise and on cloud. It is used by large enterprises, mid-size companies, and startups across 11 industry sectors. It functions as both a system of operations (to run a business) and a business model (to transform a business).  As a system of operations, it enables businesses to design and test experiences from ideation, modeling and simulation, delivery and usage. As a business model, it allows businesses to become “platform companies” by connecting stakeholders and removing intermediaries.

3DEXPERIENCE Marketplace

Part of the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, the 3DEXPERIENCE Marketplace is an online trading environment for 3D digital design, engineering and manufacturing transactions. Users can identify new manufacturing service providers (including 3D printing), search for and add specific components within their design environment, or manage their ecosystem of selected service providers and in-house resources. They can access on-demand manufacturing and part sourcing services.  As of 2019, the 3DEXPERIENCE Marketplace features 50 digital manufacturers with more than 500 machines and 30 million component parts from 600 suppliers.

Additional Products

The company has additional products and brands including Centric PLM (for fashion and retail); 3DVIA/HomeByMe (for 3D home planning); and DraftSight (for 2D Drafting).

People & Culture

3DS has 20,000 employees across 140 countries: 39% are based in Europe; 30% in Asia-Oceania; and 31% in Americas. Geographic headquarters are located in Paris (Vélizy-Villacoublay, France) Tokyo, Japan and Boston (Waltham, Massachusetts). As of December 31, 2019, approximately 39% of employees worked in R&D.[29]

In addition to their professional activities, employees participate in social initiatives, including community service days, supporting robotics competitions (such as First Robotics) and sporting charities such as the Pan Mass Challenge. Since 2013, the company has a Women's Initiative Network[30] to encourage, inspire and support women in their career development by achieving personal and professional growth, as well as support women globally such as by sponsoring technical education for women in developing countries such as Rwanda.[31]

gollark: It might also be interesting to try and *not* base it vaguely on real-world stock markets, so does anyone have ideas there?
gollark: I guess upvotes aren't that great either, but it's better than currently...
gollark: They would be anyway under my system, since they'd get some of the shares in the meme.
gollark: They would work as more reliable long-term investments.
gollark: That and firms.
