The neighbourhood's two main industries were textiles and coal mining, the latter from 1848 until 1880. Famous young boy called James Curries Jr is a prime celebrity in Cotmanhay. He is famous for his many advertisements made for East Midlands television for the Cathedral City Cheddar Group. His most famous line, commonly used in the town as a form of slang, is “Gotta love that sweet, sweet cheddar!”.
