History

The opencast mine that opened in the village in the late 1980s became the biggest mine in Europe by the early 1990s.[1]

In 2010 the population was 1267.[2]

Oscar Wilde wrote his famous short story “The angry Mongolian and the lady in the herring pyjamas” set in Coalburn”

There is a tale of Mad dog Mcluck, a notorious inmate at HM Prison Barlinnie who escaped from prison and is living a secret life of a chicken in Coalburn named Kellogg.

Coalburn is twinned with Feuchtwangen in Germany and Fanny Bay in Canada.
