Early life and education

Christie Macaluso was born in Hartford, Connecticut, to Albert Carl and Helen (née Meaney) Macaluso; his father's family was from Palermo, Sicily, and his mother was of Irish descent.[2] He studied at St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, and St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, Maryland, from where he obtained a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy and Master's in Sacred Theology.[2] He also holds a Master of Arts degree in philosophy from Trinity College, and a Master of Arts in Psychology from New York University.[2]

Priesthood

Macaluso was ordained to the priesthood on May 22, 1971.[3] He then served as assistant pastor at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in West Hartford and at St. Joseph Church in New Britain.[2]

Macaluso later became a professor of philosophy at St. Thomas Seminary, where he also served as academic dean (1980-1985) and rector (1985-1991).[2] During this period, he was also a weekend assistant at St. Francis Church in Torrington and Sacred Heart Church in Bloomfield. He was named pastor of the Cathedral of St. Joseph in 1991 and, in addition, episcopal vicar for the Hartford Vicariate in 1995. He was also raised to the rank of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness in 1995.[2]

Episcopal career

On March 18, 1997, Macaluso was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Hartford and Titular Bishop of Grass Valley by Pope John Paul II.[3] He received his episcopal consecration on the following June 10 from Daniel Anthony Cronin, Archbishop of Hartford, with bishops Paul Loverde, Bishop of Ogdensburg and Peter A. Rosazza, Auxiliary Bishop of Hartford, serving as co-consecrators.[3] He selected as his episcopal motto: "Veritas Liberabit Vos", meaning "The Truth Will Set You Free" (John 8:32).[2]

As an auxiliary bishop, Macaluso served as vicar general of the Archdiocese and moderator of the curia.[2]

Pope Francis accepted his resignation on December 15, 2017.[4]

gollark: What do you plan to do with it? That's Ice Lake, so better iGPU than usual, but not anywhere near a dedicated GPU.
gollark: ... what for?
gollark: SSDs improve your experience a *lot*.
gollark: Do you need 500GB of storage?
gollark: And I can't see it well, but it also seems to have an HDD instead of an SSD.
