Career

D'Amelio's career began on TikTok in the summer of 2019, uploading dance videos to trending songs on the platform. Her first TikTok was a lip-syncing video with her friend.[3]

In 2019, former Sony Music executive Barbara Jones signed D'Amelio to her management company, Outshine Talent.[4] In January 2020, D'Amelio signed with talent agency UTA.[5] She appeared in a Super Bowl commercial for Sabra Hummus along with other celebrities.[6] She was invited to attend Super Bowl LIV and meet Jennifer Lopez to create the TikTok challenge "J Lo Super Bowl Challenge."[7] In January 2020, D'Amelio was labeled TikTok's "reigning queen" by the New York Times.[8]

She was part of the collaborative TikTok content house known as The Hype House along with 18 others including her sister, Dixie D'Amelio.[8][9] In May 2020, a representative for the D'Amelios confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that she and her sister had left the Hype House after it had become more of a business rather than something fun.[10]

She performed a dance at the 2020 NBA All-Star Game, performing with fellow Hype House members and creator of the "Renegade" dance, Jalaiah Harmon.[11] On March 27, 2020, D'Amelio collaborated on YouTube with actor Noah Schnapp.[12] In May 2020, she and her sister announced a new podcast deal with Ramble Podcast Network, which will offer a behind-the-scenes look at their lives and specific topics on their minds.[13] In May of 2020 Hollywood Reporter called her TikTok's "biggest star".[10]

On June 16, 2020, she created an alter ego on TikTok by the name of Barley D'Amelio.[14]

Personal life

Her immediate family includes politician father, Marc D'Amelio, her mother, Heidi D'Amelio, and her sister, Dixie D'Amelio.[15] D'Amelio dated fellow TikTok star Chase Hudson, in which they confirmed their relationship in January of 2020. On April of the same year, she and Chase announced their split.[16]

D'Amelio has been subject to bullying and body shaming.[17] She and her sister made a video for UNICEF about social media and bullying.[17]

In April 2020, D'Amelio donated $50,000 to her hometown hospital, Norwalk Hospital, to help secure critical supplies for the hospital's staff amid the COVID-19 pandemic.[18]

According to a Forbes report published in August 2020, D'Amelio earned $4 million in 2019 from her numerous sponsorship deals and merchandise, making her the second highest-earning TikTok star.[19]
