Casting Blossoms to the Sky

Casting Blossoms to the Sky (Japanese: この空の花　長岡花火物語, Hepburn: Kono sora no hana: Nagaoka hanabi monogatari) is a 2012 Japanese drama film directed by Nobuhiko Ôbayashi, and stars Yasuko Matsuyuki and Masahiro Takashima. It was screened at the Catalonian International Film Festival in Sitges in 2013.[2]

Premise

Endo Reiko is a journalist visiting Nagaoka to comment on the aftermath of the earthquake in Tohoku. During the visit, she is approached by her former boyfriend, Kenichi, who tries to convince her to become the star of a play that takes place in the city during the Second World War. From local residents, Endo learns about the city's fireworks traditions, and how the region was destroyed during the war. The movie includes ruminations on the dark side of the Japanese character.[3]
