Balan Wonderworld

Balan Wonderworld is an upcoming platform game developed by Balan Company and published by Square Enix. It is scheduled for release in early 2021 for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The game is being directed by Yuji Naka with art direction by Naoto Ohshima, creators of Sonic the Hedgehog and Nights into Dreams. It is the first game by the studio, formed by Naka as a subsidiary of Square Enix.

Premise

The game is described as a "3D action platformer with musical flair".[2] It follows two characters, Leo Craig and Emma Cole, as they follow the maestro[3] Balan through the Wonderworld, a setting described as a mix of an imaginary world and reality.[4][5] Over 80 different collectible costumes give different abilities to the player character.[4] The game will play out in a series of 12 stories.[6] Journalists noted parallels to the Sonic the Hedgehog,[5] Nights into Dreams[6][5] and Super Mario[4] series.

Development

The game was announced on July 23, 2020.[6] It is the first game from Yuji Naka with Square Enix after he joined the company in 2018, under the Balan Company brand within Square Enix.[1][4][7] The game is being directed by Naka with art from Naoto Ohshima, who last worked together on Nights into Dreams and Sonic Adventure in the 1990s.[2][8] Visual Works is handling the animation, while Kazuyuki Ikumori is developing.[9] The game is scheduled for release in early 2021 for the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.[10]
