Background and recording

"Bad Time" was written and recorded in November 2017 at Wolf Cousins Studios in a day and a half, by the time Carpenter was in Stockholm, Sweden.[1][2][3] It was written by Sabrina Carpenter, Julia Karlsson and Oscar Görres, the last being the song's producer and vocal producer.[1] Carpenter, Karlsson and Görres served the background vocals and Görres programmed the song and played keyboards, bass, guitars, drums and percussion.[1] The song was mixed by Serban Ghenea at MixStar Studios in Virginia Beach, Virginia and John Hanes served as a mix assistant.[1] The song was mastered at Sterling Sound in New York City by Chris Gehringer.[1]

Composition and lyrical interpretation

Musically, "Bad Time" is a three minutes and five seconds up-tempo synth-driven song with electropop influences.[4][5] Lyrically, the song talks about someone who's calling for a "good time", but the invitation is denied because, previously, that person has already messed with Carpenter's mind.[5]

Critical reception

Julian de Valliere for The Line of Best Fit said "the album’s second promotional single and an undeniable highlight, she gleefully turns the tables on a serial flake [...] is also perhaps the best example of the lyricism and pop sensibility Carpenter brings to the album as a whole, creating image-heavy scenarios that are then exploded into a chorus with sticky hooks and a massive pay-off."[6] Mike Neid for Idolator described the song as "funny".[4]

gollark: It would be pretty good, though. You could actually replace dying parts (curse nonreplaceable phone batteries!), get upgrades as technology improves, and with eventual infrastructure support swap batteries at stations on roads or something.
gollark: If the battery modules were actually standardized you could swap them out as needed, which would be neat.
gollark: Those don't have good energy density, though, compared to batteries.
gollark: But we got it for phone charging. Eventually. Sort of. Ish.
gollark: That's probably the main problem - nobody really wants a standard.
