Ascot High School

Ascot High School is a coeducational secondary school for 11- to 18-year-olds in Portmore, St Catherine, Jamaica. It admits students who pass the Primary Exit Profile (PEP). The school shares a site with Ascot Primary School, Ascot Basic School and a large, multi-purpose sports field used by all three schools.[1]

History

Ascot High School opened in September 1 1997 with a small number of students and teachers. It has grown to 1,400 students and 60 staff.

Curriculum

Subjects include: English Language, Mathematics, Social Studies, Information Technology, Integrated Science, Caribbean History, Spanish, Religious Education, English Literature, Clothing and Textile, Home Economics Management, Food and Nutrition, Accounts, Principles of Business, Office Administration, Electronic Data Processing Management (EDPM), Agricultural Science, Visual Arts, and Physical Education.

Notable incidents

In May 2009, the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) exams were disrupted when there was a shoot-out on the school grounds.[2]

Sports

Ascot High School participates in many inter school sports competitions including basketball, netball, football, track and field, and volleyball.

Infrastructure

Ascot High has attractive, modern buildings and facilities. These include three science laboratories, three information technology laboratories, a music room, a library, an auditorium, and a visual arts room. Ascot High School has no cafeteria; students eat inside their classrooms.
