The Arturo Michelena International Airport was build by Governor of Carabobo State Oscar Celli 1985–1988.

The very first airplane to performed landing and takeoff from this terminal was a McDonnell Douglas DC-9, named "El Margariteño" from Aeropostal.

Among the plan's of expansion was to install Jet-Bridge system and build a hotel with the participation of Marriott Hotel's. But after Governor Celli left office no one had continued this project. So, basically the main structure reminds the same since first day of inauguration.

The Valencia non-directional beacon (Ident: VLC) and VOR-DME (Ident: VAL) are located on the field.[3][4]
