Life
Marcolongo was born in Crema in 1987. Marcolongo studied at the University of Milan and at the Holden School of creative writing in Turin.
She is a classics expert, linguist, and a former speechwriter for Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi and the Italian Democratic Party. She worked for him through two elections.[1]
Books
The Ingenious Language
Marcolongo became known for her book La lingua geniale (The Ingenious Language - nine epic reasons to love Greek),[2] which advocates reasons for learning Ancient Greek. It became a bestseller and has been translated into several languages. As of February 2018 the book had sold 200,000 copies. The Guardian said that Marcolongo makes a "convincing case for [Greek's] singularly expressive power" and she shows "us new ways of seeing and understanding the world."[3]
The Hero's Part
Her second book La misura eroica (The Hero's Part) is a narrative essay and draws inspiration from the myth Jason and the Golden Fleece.[4]
Pamela Ramos speaks of an "essay to the glory of individual heroism".
