History

In 1930, Syed Hamzah ibni al-Marhum Syed Safi Jamalullail, the fifth Raja of Perlis, and at the time serving as Vice President of the Perlis State Council, composed the tune to Amin, Amin, ya Rabaljalil. Jamalullail then asked R. G. Iles, the State Engineer, to transcribe and harmonise it, since he was not proficient at reading or writing music.[1]

Subsequently, the tune was orchestrated by Captain Edgar Lenthall, bandmaster for the Central Band of the Royal Malay Regiment.[2] It would be adopted as state anthem of Perlis in 1935.[1]

Lyrics

Arabic/Malay original
English translation

Amin, amin, ya Rabaljalil,
Doa hamba yang sangat zalil,
Tinggikan daulat serta adil,
Kekal perintah Jamalullail.

Rabbana ya Rabbana,
Adimlana malikana,
Sultana saiyed putra,
Yamal ja'an lil-qasidin.

Narju kakum 'auna lahu,
Daiman jalal tahu,
Mustashfi'an lil-muslimin,
Ayamuji bassa ilin.

Amen, amen, o majestic Lord,
Hear the prayers of your wards,
Uphold he whom is just and sovereign,
May Jamalullail forever reign.

Lord, oh Lord o'er the meek,
Our King from ill ever forfend,
The Sultan Syed Putra,
A refuge for those whom seek.

We plead that you may task,
His Majesty everlasting,
To defend the Muslim faithful,
And answer all whom ask.
