28th World Science Fiction Convention

The 28th World Science Fiction Convention, also known as Heicon '70, was held 20–24 August 1970 at the Stadthalle Heidelberg in Heidelberg, West Germany.

Manfred Kage eventually became Heicon's convention chairman, the last of more than a dozen fans who briefly held the position during the convention's rocky organizational period. The professional guests of honor were E. C. Tubb (UK), Robert Silverberg (US), and Herbert W. Franke (Germany). Elliot K. Shorter, the 1970 Trans Atlantic Fan Fund (TAFF) winner, was the fan guest of honor. The toastmaster was John Brunner. Total attendance was approximately 620.

Awards

The Hugo Awards, named after Hugo Gernsback, are presented every year for the best science fiction or fantasy works and achievements of the previous year. The results are based on the ballots submitted by members of the World Science Fiction Society. Other awards, including the Astounding Award for Best New Writer (since 1973; named "John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer" until 2019), are also presented at each year's Worldcon.[1]

gollark: Which is... kind of useful if you do, but sometimes you need a simple or intuitive explanation for a thing.
gollark: In my experience, Wikipedia seems to mostly have highly technical knowledge which assumes you already generally know about a subject.
gollark: You mean as in "shows them in search results" or "allows Google Cloud Platform etc. to be used for them"?
gollark: If they don't officially ban everything some people might disagree with, they will run into complaining people and/or lawsuits.
gollark: I have no idea what guns are meant to look like so meh.
