2020 Gilgit Baltistan Assembly election

The 2020 Gilgit Baltistan Assembly election will be held on 18 August 2020 to elect the Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. The current assembly term ended on 24 June 2020,[1][2][3] although the date of the election is in doubt because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has hit Gilgit-Baltistan especially hard.

Background

2015 elections

Following the elections in 2015, Pakistan Muslim League (N), led by Mian Shahbaz Sharif, emerged as the largest party with a supermajority of 22 seats out of a total of 33 in the Gilgit Baltistan Assembly. Hafiz Hafeezur Rehman was elected as the Chief Minister of Gilgit Baltistan.[4][5]

Timeline

  • On 30 April 2020, the Supreme Court of Pakistan allowed the federal government to form a caretaker government and hold a general election in Gilgit-Baltistan.[6]
  • On 23 June 2020, the Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly is dissolved after completion of full 5 year term.[7]
  • On 24 June 2020, Mir Afzal sworn in as Gilgit-Baltistan caretaker chief minister.[8]
