2020 Chilean national plebiscite
A national plebiscite is scheduled to be held in Chile on 25 October 2020.[1][2][3] The planned referendum will ask voters if they want a new constitution and if they want it to be drafted by a "Constitutional Convention," made up by members elected directly for the convention, or a "Mixed Constitutional Convention," made up half by currently-sitting members of Parliament and half by elected citizens.[2] A second vote on 11 April 2021, alongside municipal and gubernatorial elections, would elect the members of the Constitutional Convention, and a third vote would accept or reject the new constitution after it is drafted, expected to occur in 2022.[1]

The plebiscite is a response to the 2019 Chilean protests.[2]
Postponement
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, on 24 March 2020 the Congress agreed to rescheduled the plebiscite from 26 April 2020 to 25 October 2020 and the subsequent Convention election from 25 October 2020 to 11 April 2021. The change, which required a constitutional reform, was promulgated by the President and published in the country's Official Gazette on 26 March 2020.[4][1]
