Wozniacki also regained the WTA no. 1 singles ranking for the first time since 2012.[2] Both finalists saved match points earlier in the tournament: Halep saved three match points against Lauren Davis in the third round and two match points against Angelique Kerber in the semifinals, while Wozniacki saved two match points against Jana Fett in the second round. Halep lost in a Grand Slam final for the third time, though she would eventually win the French Open months later.[3]

Serena Williams was the defending champion, but chose not to participate this year, stating that she was not fully fit after giving birth to her daughter in September 2017.

In addition to Wozniacki and Halep, Garbiñe Muguruza, Elina Svitolina, Karolína Plíšková and Jeļena Ostapenko were also in contention for the no. 1 singles ranking at the start of the tournament.[4]

The third round match between Halep and Davis lasted 48 games, tying Chanda Rubin and Arantxa Sánchez Vicario's 1996 quarterfinal match for the Australian Open's record for most games played in a women's match.[5]

At 15 years and 6 months old, Marta Kostyuk became the youngest player to win a main draw match at the Australian Open since Martina Hingis in 1996 and the youngest to reach the third round at any Grand Slam event since Mirjana Lučić-Baroni at the 1997 US Open.[6] Kostyuk was the youngest player to qualify for a Grand Slam main draw since Sesil Karatantcheva at the 2005 Australian Open.[7]

gollark: So is score voting.
gollark: Approval voting is neat *and* simple too.

gollark: I'm not sure if they actually are, the internet has weird people on it.
