2014 US Open – Men's Singles

Marin Čilić defeated Kei Nishikori in the final 6–3, 6–3, 6–3 to win the Men's Singles tennis title at the 2014 US Open.[1] Rafael Nadal was the defending champion, but withdrew before the tournament began because of a right wrist injury.[2]

The finalists defeated Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer in their respective semi-finals to guarantee a new champion, the first Grand Slam final with a guaranteed new champion since the 2008 Australian Open (when Djokovic defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga), and the first Grand Slam with two first-time Slam finalists since the 2005 French Open (where Nadal defeated Mariano Puerta). Nishikori and Čilić were also the two lowest-ranked seeds to reach the US Open final since Pete Sampras won the title in 2002 as the 17th seed.

As of the end of 2019, this was the last Grand Slam final where none of the Big Four has featured in the final since the 2005 Australian Open.

Nishikori became the first Japanese player to reach the Grand Slam semifinal since Jiro Sato at the 1933 French Championships (now French Open), and the first Japanese man to do so in the Open Era.

Čilić beat Nishikori to become the second Croatian to win a Grand Slam men's singles title after his coach Goran Ivanišević triumphed at 2001 Wimbledon.[3]

This was also the last Grand Slam tournament for French player Michaël Llodra and Canadian Frank Dancevic, and the last US Open appearance for Albert Montañes, who participated in 13 consecutives editions (2002 - 2014).
