- January 1 – The Quebec Sales Tax (QST) rises one percentage point to 9.5%.
- March 29 – Finance Minister Jim Flaherty announces the 2012 budget which includes cuts to the CBC, the reduction of over 19,000 federal jobs, and the discontinuation of the Penny by the Royal Canadian Mint.[1][2]
April to June
- April 24 – A sawmill in Prince George, British Columbia explodes killing two workers.[3]
- June 2 – A shooting at the Toronto Eaton Centre leaves one dead and seven others injured.[4]
- June 23 – A partial roof collapse at the Algo Centre Mall in Elliot Lake, Ontario injures dozens and kills two.[5]
July to September
- July 6 – The Canadian Federal government approves Target's entry into Canada.[6]
- September 24 – An outbreak of E. coli causes at least four illnesses in Alberta, a massive beef recall, and the temporary shutdown of XL Foods in Brooks, Alberta.

- October 15 – Premier of Ontario, Dalton McGuinty, announces his plan to resign.[7][8]
- October 18 – The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission rejects BCE's bid to take over Astral Media, citing that the deal would have given the company too much market power.[9][10]

- Zellers announces store mascot Zeddy has been adopted by Camp Trillium, after a public vote.[11][12]
- Yorkdale Mall opens $185 million expansion, with 29 stores including Canada's first locations of the Microsoft Store, Kate Spade New York, LOFT, Ted Baker London and Tesla Motors.[13]
- November 26 – Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney named Bank of England governor.[14]
- November 30 – Ontario Finance Minister Dwight Duncan calls on Ottawa to sell its shares of General Motors, purchased during a bail-out.[15]
