The 2011 Greek Cup Final was Atromitos' first-ever Greek Cup Final in their 88 years of existence and AEK Athens' twentieth Greek Cup Final in their 87-year history.

AEK Athens had reached the Greek Cup Final twenty times, winning thirteen of them. The last time that they had won the Cup was in 2002 (2–1 against Olympiacos). The last time that had played in a Final was in 2009, where they had lost to Olympiacos after a shocking match that had been ended after a penalty shootout procedure (14–15).
