Summary
Last year's Third Conference runner-up Seven-Up Uncolas didn't make past the eliminations in the first two conferences. Starting the Governor's Cup, the team became known as Pepsi Mega Bottlers, they brought in Anthony Martin as their import, who scored 40 points in his debut, a 107-124 loss by Pepsi to Swift. [1] After playing only one game, Martin was replaced by Kenny Redfield, who was their import in the Commissioner's Cup and was recalled back. The Bottlers won seven of their next nine games and made it to the semifinal round this time with Redfield enjoying a three-inch height advantage over his counterparts due to the handicap ruling. The Mega Bottlers won four of their eight matches in the semifinals and played Swift Mighty Meaties in a sudden-death playoff in the first of two knockout games to determine the second finals berth. The Bottlers lost to Swift, 122-124 in double-overtime on November 30.
Notable dates
June 18: Seven-Up defeated Sta.Lucia, 101-99, for its first win in the Commissioners Cup after losing to Shell Helix in their first game. Ludovico Valenciano completed an assist by Kenny Redfield with a fraction of a second left. [2]
November 28: Pepsi Mega forge two playoffs among three teams for the right to face San Miguel Beermen for the Governors Cup finals with a come-from-behind 96-93 triumph over Purefoods. Kenny Redfield put together his 11th triple-double game of 48 points, 16 rebounds and 11 assists. [3]
