Skirmish on the sky wreck

This skirmish occurred in 17 ᴇ.ʏ. when Thaw Daggerslash lured Wind Jackal and his son, Quint, onto a sky wreck, where he killed Wind Jackal.

Prelude

In the months leading up to the battle, Thaw Daggerslash made several attempts to kill Wind Jackal and claim his place as captain of the Galerider. He did this by preying on the captain's desire for revenge against his old quartermaster, Turbot Smeal. Daggerslash lured Wind Jackal into traps by posing as Smeal, knowing the captain would fall for them regardless of the danger.

After finding the sky wreck, Thaw tethered his sky barge, the Mireraider, to it, and set off to find the Galerider in the Great Shryke Slave Market. He claimed that Smeal had joined his crew but betrayed and festooned him. Upon hearing this story, Wind Jackal set sail, following a ratbird from the Mireraider.

Battle

Boarding the sky wreck

Thaw suggested that he and Wind Jackal board the wreck alone, as Quint deemed it too dangerous to board. He soon changed his mind, however, after watching the pair descend the zipline onto the wreck, and followed behind them. Once aboard the wreck, Thaw and Wind Jackal split up to search for Smeal. While out of Wind Jackal's sight, Thaw took the opportunity to put on the skullpelt mask, bicorne hat and greatcoat which disguised him as Smeal.

Death of Wind Jackal

Thaw, disguised as Smeal, ambushing Wind Jackal

Once he was wearing his disguise, Thaw snuck up behind Wind Jackal and attacked him. Quint saw the attack but was unable to help his father because he was still moving along the zipline to the sky wreck. Wind Jackal was able to defend himself and fight back, stabbing Thaw in the shoulder. After short swordfight, Thaw got the upper hand and stabbed Wind Jackal through the chest. He then quickly fled the scene to change out of the Smeal costume.

Once Quint had landed and clambered up onto the deck, he found his father slumped on the flight-rock platform, dying. Quint grasped his father, but it was too late, and he died.

Battling the wreck creatures

Awoken by the scent of Wind Jackal's blood dripping onto the flight-rock, a wreck-demon crawled out of its nest and onto the deck, where it began to attack Quint. Quint sliced the demon into several pieces, enraged by the death of his father. After this, Thaw reappeared, and claimed to have killed Smeal.

Masses of creatures from around the wreck then began to attack Quint and Thaw, who had to fight them off back to back. The creatures were relentless, as one was killed, another would fill its place. As the pair began to tire, the crew of the Galerider lowered Hubble down to rescue them. He grabbed them and the trio were slowly winched back up from the wreck.

Aftermath

Quint watching the sky wreck explode

Quint lay in his hammock for a while, recovering from the events. While he was unconscious, Thaw ordered the destruction of the wreck. Tem Barkwater launched a flaming harpoon at it, which set the wreck ablaze. At first, the weight of the heated flight-rock counteracted the lift of the buoyant wood, but soon the heat caused the mire-clams to begin falling from the rock, tearing chunks from it. As the flight-rock disintegrated, the blazing ship shot up into the sky, until it was eventually gone.
