Battle between Wind Jackal and Purlis Havelock

"Relax, old friend. We can’t afford a wasteful trip to some woodtroll village who knows where. This way, we get double our fee and Havelock here takes the wretches off our hands..."
Turbot Smeal

The Battle between Wind Jackal and Purlis Havelock was a skirmish that occurred when two league ships interrupted the liberation of woodtroll slaves by the crew of the Galerider at the edge of the Deepwoods. The arrival of the league ships was organised by the Galerider's quartermaster, Turbot Smeal, who had agreed with Purlis Havelock that the slaves would not be liberated, but transferred to Havelock's League of Furnace Tenders.

The battle

At the conclusion of the Galerider's raiding of a blackwood vessel carrying slaves to the League of Smelters and Stokers, Spillins, the lookout on the Galerider, alerted the crew to the presence of two league ships — the Forger of Triumph and the Smelter of Woes.

Wind Jackal soon realised that these ships had arrived not to free the woodtrolls, but to acquire them for the League of Furnace Tenders. Turbot Smeal then revealed his true allegiance, countermanding Wind Jackal's orders and supporting the enslaving of the woodtrolls. In response, Wind Jackal brought the Galerider around in a broad arc towards one of the opposing ships, and, realising that they were at a disadvantage against the well-armed league ships, collapsed the mainsail to feign defeat.

Havelock ordered the league ships to attack the seemingly crippled Galerider from both sides, which was what Wind Jackal was counting on. At the last moment, he ordered Ramrock to lift the Galerider out of harm's way, causing the two league ships to collide. The Forger of Triumph punched a role in the side of the Smelter of Woes, sending the latter ship spiralling down towards the Twilight Woods. Havelock, on the Forger of Triumph, decided to retreat back to Undertown.

Aftermath

Wind Jackal returned the woodtrolls to their village, and the Galerider's crew enjoyed a great feast in their honour. Leaving the empty slave ship with the woodtrolls, Wind Jackal and his crew returned to Undertown, where they discovered that Smeal had started the Great Fire of the Western Quays.
