Anchor Tree

The Anchor Tree[1] marked the furthest point of a woodtroll village. A well-worn path led to the anchor tree of each woodtroll village.[2]

The Naming Ritual

To find a name, a woodtroll matron would walk out to the anchor tree, tether herself to the trunk and walk as far as the rope reached. When the end of the tether was reached, the matron would cut off a piece of wood from the nearest tree, using a naming knife. Once safely back in the village, she would kiss the piece of wood twice and throw it in the fire and the name was revealed.[3]
