It was founded on June 24, 1983 by prominent figures around the world, including Margaret Thatcher, then British Prime Minister, George H.W. Bush, then Vice President of the United States of America, Helmut Kohl then Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, and Jacques Chirac(French Mayor at the time), then mayor of Paris.
the IDU comprises 73 full and associate members from 63 different countries.
