Java Edition:Spawn Egg
Spawn eggs normally are unobtainable in survival mode. They are useful items to obtain, as one can spawn nearly any mob in the game and change spawners to spawn that mob indefinitely, allowing for the creation of unique and fast mob farms. They can be obtained in snapshot 11w49a (1.1 snapshot), 22w13oneBlockAtATime, and 23w13a_or_b.
Obtaining
B Creative
In snapshot 11w49a, pressing the letter "B" on your keyboard would put you in creative mode, allowing you to obtain many discontinued items, such as spawn eggs. Spawn eggs were a different color than current spawn eggs, and could only stack via the usage of understacked items.
11w49a Available Spawn Eggs
Since the creative toggle ability was in such an early version, only these spawn eggs were available:
- Creeper
- Skeleton
- Spider
- Zombie
- Slime
- Ghast
- Pig Zombie[1]
- Enderman
- Cave Spider
- Silverfish
- Blaze
- Magma Cube
- Pig
- Sheep
- Cow
- Chicken
- Squid
- Wolf
- Mooshroom
- Villager
22w13oneBlockAtATime Enderman Spawning
In the April Fools' snapshot 22w13oneBlockAtATime, endermen spawn with random blocks with random block states. The generic_item_block that exists exclusively in this version has a block state for every single item in the game, including each spawn egg.
This means that the chance for an enderman to spawn with a spawn egg is very rare. There are 902 equally likely blocks, and generic_item_block is just a 1/902 chance. Then, there are 1105 different items that the generic_item_block can be set to. For a specific desired spawn egg, the chance is 1/902 * 1/1105 = 1/996710 (≈0.0001%) for it to be selected. In total, there are 67 different spawn eggs they can spawn with, giving a 1/902 * 67/1105 = 67/996710 (≈0.0067%) chance for any spawn egg to be selected.

23w13a_or_b Votes
The April Fools' snapshot 23w13a_or_b introduced several methods to obtain normally unobtainable features, this includes any spawn egg.
- The
egg_freevote, when applied, will allow any item (without NBT) to be laid by chickens, this includes any spawn egg. - The
give_itemvote, when applied, will grant all online players a random amount of any item (without NBT), this includes any spawn egg. - The
villager_gemvote, when applied, will replace all emeralds in new villager trades with any item (without NBT), this includes any spawn egg.
The egg_free vote will replace the item that chickens are capable of laying, this means that chickens will lay a random item (without NBT) instead of eggs. When the game selects a random item, it has the possibility of choosing "reshuffle" where the chicken will lay a new item every time it attempts to lay an egg. While chickens are in a loaded chunk, they will attempt to lay an egg every five to ten minutes (6,000 to 12,000 ticks) unless the chicken was a chicken jockey.
The give_item vote will grant all online players any item (without NBT) with a stack size between one and the items max stack size. This vote only works once and will not grant items to players multiple times, to obtain anymore items from this vote the player must wait until it appears again.
The villager_gem vote will replace all emeralds of a villagers new trade with any item (without NBT). This will not replace any current gem trades, including emeralds or items that were applied through this vote. If this vote is removed or altered, any new trades that any previous villagers receive will return to using emeralds, or be replaced by the new item. Villagers affected by this vote will retain their trades upon downgrading or updating, if the item does not exist within that version it will become air, otherwise the item will be preserved.
The April Fools' snapshot 23w13a_or_b introduced several methods to obtain normally unobtainable features, this includes any spawn egg except for ender dragon and wither spawn eggs.
- The
replace_itemsvote, when applied, will replace all items in online players' inventories with any item (NBT is preserved), this includes any spawn egg except for ender dragon and wither spawn eggs. - The
replace_loot_dropvote, when applied, will replace all loot drops of an item with any item (NBT is preserved), this includes any spawn egg except for ender dragon and wither spawn eggs. - The
replace_recipe_outputvote, when applied, will replace the output of a recipe with any item (NBT is preserved), this includes any spawn egg except for ender dragon and wither spawn eggs.
The replace_items vote will replace all instances of any item that is not present within the operator creative tab in all online player inventories with another item that is not present within the operator creative tab. This vote only works once and will not grant items to players multiple times, to obtain anymore items from this vote the player must wait until it appears again. When the items are replaced, any NBT present on the replaced items will be also be present on the replacement items, this allows any spawn egg except for ender dragon and wither spawn eggs to be obtained with nearly any NBT.
The replace_loot_drop vote will replace the loot table of any item that is not present within the operator creative tab, with another item that is not present within the operator creative tab. This only truly affects items which have an original drop source such as from blocks or entities. This vote only works once and will not grant items to players multiple times, to obtain anymore items from this vote the player must wait until it appears again. Any NBT present on the replaced items will be also be present on the replacement items, this allows any spawn egg except for ender dragon and wither spawn eggs to be obtained with certain NBT.
The replace_recipe_output vote will replace the output item of a crafting recipe with any item that is not present within the operator creative tab, when attempting to craft the replaced item, the resulting item will instead be the replacement item. This vote only works once and will not grant items to players multiple times, to obtain anymore items from this vote the player must wait until it appears again. Any NBT that would be given to the replaced items will be also be given to the replacement items, this allows any spawn egg except for ender dragon and wither spawn eggs to be obtained with certain NBT.
- The
spawn_egg_chancevote, when applied, will allow any mob with a spawn egg to have a chance to drop its spawn egg upon death.
The spawn_egg_chance vote allows any mob with a spawn egg to have a chance to drop its spawn egg upon death. This will be a number from 1-100%.
Uses
Impossible Spawners
To do: Move to separate page & add 22w13obaat
From, 14w28b to 25w42a (present), right clicking on a spawner will cause the spawner to become of that mob type. This allows for many usually impossible spawners.

Wither Skeleton Jockey
Spiders don't normally spawn in the Nether, but using spawn eggs has a rare chance to create a wither skeleton spider jockey.
Skeleton Jockey in End/Nether
The spider egg can be used to get skeleton jockeys in the end or nether, which is normally impossible due to the inability of jockeys to use portals.
Mob Wearing Wool Jockey in End/Nether
The spider spawn egg is the only way to get the wool-headed mob skeleton-spider jockey combo.
Weaponless Mobs
Due to different bugs, in versions 18w10a to 18w10d (1.13 snapshots) and 20w07a to 20w12a (1.16 snapshots), you could spawn in weaponless mobs with spawn eggs.
Invalid Dimension Mob
Before 12w34a (1.4 snapshot), mobs could not travel through portals. The spawn eggs can be used to get many mobs in dimensions that are normally impossible.
