Background

Released in late 2020, the Xbox Series S is Microsoft’s smallest gaming console, slotting below the Xbox Series X as a digital-only option in Microsoft’s new line of Xbox Series consoles. With a new compact form factor and Microsoft’s new Velocity architecture, the new Xbox Series S boasts backwards compatibility with existing Xbox One devices and games, even letting users use their existing Xbox One controllers. Xbox One and select Xbox 360 and original Xbox games will be backwards compatible.

The Xbox Series S targets 1440p gaming at 120fps. It features a system-on-chip (SoC) with AMD’s Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU architectures to deliver 4 teraflops of graphical computing performance.

Select game titles will have an “Optimized for Series X|S” icon, offering faster load times, higher resolutions, and smoother framerates. The Xbox Series S was originally only available in a matte "Robot White" finish. On September 1st, 2023, the Xbox Series S was updated with a 1 TB, matte "Carbon Black" option. The Xbox Series S includes a redesigned Xbox controller, featuring a new share button, textured triggers and bumpers, and a new D-pad.

The most often replaced Xbox Series S parts include the power supply, fan assembly, and heat sink.

Identification

The Xbox Series S has two model numbers: RRS-00010 and RRS-00003.

The Series S is much smaller than the Series X and has no disc drive. The digital-only console has a large black circular vent, and either a matte white finish for 500 GB models or a matte black finish for newer 1TB models.

The model number and other information can be found on the back of the console.
