Chrono Splicer (3.5e Prestige Class)

Chrono Splicer

Stop! It's hammer time.
—Lore Sham, Lizardfolk Chrono Splicer

Chrono Splicers are generally monks who have become so at one with the universe that they can see the strands of time itself. They literally live in the moment, valuing every experience as a treasure. They do not abhor violence, even revelling in chance to fight, and often make quick work of their foes. Compared to warriors and barbarians, chrono splicers are lightning fast, able to dance through time unburdened by reality. Chrono Splicers can use these strands of time to move at incredible speeds unmatched by any other class. A Chrono Splicer 'seen' in battle will often have several images of himself attacking because he moves too fast for the eye to register his new placement.

Becoming a Chrono Splicer

Monks are the only class that can begin a career as a Chrono Splicer, though Monk/Rogues aren't uncommon. Anyone who pursues this class values speed and quick thinking over any other attribute. Chrono Splicers are typically very contented characters with an imperturbable demeanor who understand that their way of living sometimes will sometimes clash with others. They work well in any group, provided that the group isn't having moral troubles of their own. Good Chrono Splicers go out of their way to help and protect the helpless. Evil Chrono Splicers are generally content with being a henchman as long as they have an escape plan.

Class Features

Monk (Ex): Each odd level of Chrono Splicer counts as a level of monk for the purposes of determining your Unarmed Strike damage, your Flurry of Blows, AC Bonus, and your Fast Movement. You gain no other benefits.

Sneak Attack: This is exactly like the rogue ability of the same name. The extra damage dealt increases by +1d6 every even level. If a Chrono Splicer gets a sneak attack bonus from another source the bonuses on damage stack.

Time Weave: A Chrono Splicer reweaves the threads of time to splice alternate timelines together, allowing him attack the same creature more times than normally possible. Once per day, a chrono splicer may attempt to Time Weave with one normal melee attack. If the melee attack successfully hits, then at the end of his normal attacks, he gains an additional number of attacks depending on his class level. Each attack made with Time Weave after the first gains a cumulative -2 on the attack roll. Your opponent is treated as being flatfooted for the first Time Weave attack you make, which can enable a rogue’s sneak attack ability, or abilities similar.

Every 3 levels after 1st, the amount of times the Chrono Splicer can use Time Weave increases by 1. Every odd level 3 and above, the amount of attacks they can make during a Time Weave increases by 1.

At level 1, the Chrono Splicer's Armor Class rises by 1 for 1 round after using a Time Weave. At level 5, this bonus increases to 2, and at level 10, increases to 3.

A Chrono Splicer cannot use Time Weave if he is wearing any armor at all.

Uncanny Dodge (Ex): Starting at 2nd level, a Chrono Splicer can react to danger before his senses would normally allow him to do so. He retains his Dexterity bonus to AC (if any) even if he is caught flat-footed or struck by an invisible attacker. However, he still loses his Dexterity bonus to AC if immobilized.

If a Chrono Splicer already has uncanny dodge from a different class he automatically gains improved uncanny dodge (see below) instead.

Time Duplicates: At 5th level, the Chrono Splicer has learned the art of the Time Weave so well that he can link the threads of time together. This creates the effect of a Minor Image spell for each attack made during a Time Weave. The Minor Images only last until the Chrono Splicer's next turn.

Improved Evasion (Ex): This ability works like evasion, except that while the Chrono Splicer still takes no damage on a successful Reflex saving throw against attacks henceforth he henceforth takes only half damage on a failed save. A helpless Chrono Splicer does not gain the benefit of improved evasion.

Dimension Door: (Su) At 10th level, 3/day the Chrono Splicer can teleport, as dimension door, as a swift action to a maximum range equal to his movement speed. The ability affects only the chrono splicer, who never appears within a solid object and can act immediately after teleporting. (caster level 15)

Epic Class Features

Improved Uncanny Dodge: A Chrono Splicer of 14th level or higher can no longer be flanked.

Temporal Stasis (Su): 1/day, a Chrono Splicer of 15th level can cast Temporal as a 15th level caster.

Time Stop(Su): 1/day, a Chrono Splicer of 17th level can cast Time Stop as a 20th level caster.

Foresight(Su): 1/day, a Chrono Splicer of 17th level can cast Foresight as a 20th level caster.

Multiclass Note: A monk who becomes a Chrono Splicer may continue advancing as a monk.

Playing a Chrono Splicer

Combat: Chrono Splicers fill the melee combat role a non-tank Fighter would, drawing attention with their images, but not having the high Hit Points or Armor Class needed to absorb many hits.

Advancement: Chrono Splicers tend to jump back and forth between Monk, Rogue, and Chrono Splice. Rogues' sneak attack ability can extremely benefit from the Chrono Splicers' Time Weave ability.

Resources: Chrono Splicers tend to be solitary, though they can get help from the monastery they were a part of before they became a Chrono Splicer.

Chrono Splicers in the World

Bat-shit crazy, the lot of 'em
—Kirin Kotellos, Human farmer

Chrono Splicers are eager for knowledge, but most of all eager for adventure. Many of them view their abilities as a privilege that should be used for whatever purpose they hold dear.

NPC Reactions: Most commoners who know of the Chrono Splicers think of them as haughty, but the majority of any population is simply unaware that Chrono Splicers exist. Chrono Splicers come across as monks.
