Chosen of the Ooze (5e Template)

Chosen of the Ooze

Sometimes, a creature arises that has some measure of control over oozes and slimes. Such a creature will often suffer from terrible insanity, though the magic that allows them to control oozes also allows them to cast spells, transform into oozy forms, and summon acidic slime.

Prerequisite

Any aberration, dragon, fiend, giant, humanoid, monstrosity, or undead.

Statistics

Type. The chosen of the ooze adds the shapechanger tag to its types.

Damage Resistances. The chosen of the ooze resists acid and poison damage.

Condition Immunities. The chosen of the ooze is immune to the poisoned condition.

Languages. The chosen of the ooze learns Abyssal.

Skills. The chosen of the ooze gains proficiency in the Arcana, Perception and Survival skills.

Alignment. The chosen of the ooze's alignment can be any chaotic alignment, but they tend to be chaotic evil.

Traits

Insanity. The chosen of the ooze has advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened.

Spellcasting. The chosen of the ooze gains spellcasting equal to a 3rd-level sorcerer, with one more level for every 3 CR it has above CR 1 (i.e. level 4 at CR 4, level 5 at CR 7, level 6 at CR 10, up to a maximum of 10 levels gained in this way).

Actions

Change Shape. The chosen of the ooze magically transforms into an ooze with CR no greater than its own, or back into its true form. It reverts to its true form if it dies. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying is absorbed by the new form. In ooze form, the chosen of the ooze retains its alignment, hit points, Hit Dice, and Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores, as well as this action. Its statistics and capabilities are otherwise replaced by those of the new form.

Create Green Slime (Recharges after a Long Rest). The chosen of the ooze creates a patch of green slime (see "Dungeon Hazards" in chapter 5 of the Dungeon Masters Guide). The slime appears on a section of wall, ceiling, or floor within 30 feet of the chosen of the ooze.

CR Calculation

Recalculate the creature's CR with the following considerations:

  • Resistance to acid and poison damage.
  • Damage-per-round, AC, and effective AC may increase (from Spellcasting).
