This page is of questionable balance. Reason: Strictly better than the standard dragonborn in nearly every regard, gets an unarmored defense better than the Barbarian among other things

Anime Dragonborn

The anime dragonborn, when compared to their Forgotten Realms brethren, differ greatly in some regards. Though shaped by draconic gods or the dragons themselves, just as the dragonborn were, they tend to be more varied in ability depending on their draconic heritage as it affects their bodies to a greater degree than other dragonborn.

Physical Description

Their draconic heritage has left a clear mark on the way they look. Their teeth are sharply pointed, and their eyes are reptilian with colors ranging in black, red, white, silver, or gold, as well as the full range of human coloration.

Their skin tones cover the full range of draconic coloration and depending on their heritage, their skin can be made of fine scales, a thick leathery hide similar to that of a rhino, or some combination of the two. They tend to have horns that take a variety of shapes: some have curling horns like a ram, others have straight and tall horns like a gazelle’s, and some spiral upward like an antelopes’ horns.

They have dexterous medium-sized tails usually between five to six feet long, and they tend to keep it lashed or coil around their legs or waists to prevent them from getting caught in doors or being trampled on while in busy city streets. Their tails are dexterous and strong enough to support their full body weight on its own. Anime dragonborn don't have hair but either thrills or spines that trail from their forehead all the way to the tip of their tail. Their ears are pointed just like an elf's, but smaller.

Behavior

Like most draconic races, their heritage can play a role in their personality and how they interact with the world around them, although this is not always the case. For example, those with a red dragon heritage can tend to be quick to anger, whereas those with a brass heritage tend to be bold and loud.

Self-Sufficient

To an anime dragonborn, being self-sufficient is important and personal responsibility is ingrained into them from birth. They believe that if you're going to do anything you must give it your all. This often leads them to be tenacious to a fault. They also believe that mastering a skill is one of the highest displays of respect you can give to either the teacher or the nation as a whole.

Additional draconic heritage appearance and personality

This section is meant as an optional extra to give you an idea of how you want your dragonborn to look and how they might act depending on their draconian heritage.

Light dragon

Light dragons tend to be bright white, with brightly colored patterns covering their bodies that give off a slightly radiant glow. Light dragons tend to be somewhat reclusive often preferring to find far-off territories, though they do keep amiable connections with their own kin.

Wasteland dragons

Wasteland dragons tend to be varied shades of earthy, clay, and sandy colors to help them blend into the sands of their homelands. Due to their environment and lack of resources, wasteland dragons tend to be highly territorial, especially when dealing with spellcasters. They are also very predatory, being ferocious and carnivorous hunters.

Shadow dragons

Shadow dragons tend to be dark in appearance, giving off a smokey residue, with piercing hollow glowing light blue eyes. Corrupted by the evil of shadow fell, shadow dragons are consumed with a never-ending desire to spread darkness and disappear.

Astral Dragons

Astral dragons tend to have black-toned scales with a pearlescent silver sheen to them. Astral Dragons are often inclined to spend most of their time traveling between plains in the timeless void. They really have no investment in the events of the Material Plane, making them truly neutral towards most of existence.

Eldritch dragons

Eldritch dragons tend to have purple-toned scales with a pearlescent green sheen to them. Little is know about eldritch dragons, as they tend to exist outside of mortal understanding. Powerful and mysterious, their true motivations are unknown; though they have been known to be a source of power for warlocks.

Ethereal dragons

Ethereal dragons tend to have blue-toned scales with a pearlescent gold sheen to them. Ethereal dragons tend to be highly spiritual in nature, with a deep connection to the souls that share their realms. Though neutral, they can become incredibly dangerous and something to be feared if slighted.

Platinum dragons

Platinum dragons tend to have metallic platinum scales and give off a slightly radiant glow. Following in the footsteps of their metallic cousin, platinum dragons are generally good-natured towards the other races of the Material Plane. They have a fondness for treasures and if satisfied with gifts or tributes are willing to grant their wisdom and protection.

History

The anime dragonborn historical home is a mix of large and small islands to the west of the main continent. Their early history is a long one, filled with wars between larger clans, and for over 1000 years these wars were commonplace.

These wars were usually over slighted honor or land grabs. If they weren't fighting amongst themselves, they were usually fighting off invaders from the mainlands who were foolish enough to even try. Usually, an outside invader meant the clans would have to put aside their differences and make tentative alliances in order to stand a chance.

Eventually, one such invasion from a great empire from the mainland spread through and decimated their homeland to the extent that only a few clans to the north and west were left; now under the control of the invaders, the clans were united under the banner of the new lords. Over 500 years their culture gradually changed; instead of seeing themselves as clans, they now saw themselves as a nation.

After the collapse of the great empire from the mainland, rather than splitting into clans again, the dragonborn chose to make the strongest among them the royal family. To determine who the strongest was, they had a great battle royale of the strongest warriors.

Generations passed with the royal family occasionally attempting to take over the remaining clans, and fighting off more invaders, each with varying degrees of success.

Eventually, a pact was made with the remaining clans to finally unite the islands; The pact states that the clans can rule their lands under the banner and influence of the crown in exchange for support and protection from the crown. The clans can even have influence on how the crown rules its lands. This pact has been in effect for several generations and is still in effect even to this day.

Every now and then, there are those in the clans that agitate for independence. More often than not, this is just bluster and ego that usually goes nowhere.

Society

The anime dragonborn society is a lot like that of the British Empire during the Victorian era. They tend to have a heavy focus on self-sufficiency, individuality, and personal responsibility. They are proud of their history, and although there are still some individuals who harbor animosity towards the crown, most dragonborn have little desire to return to constant clan fighting.

Anime Dragonborn Names

Anime Dragonborn have personal names given at birth. They use their clan names as titles as a mark of respect to the community that raised them.

If you ever come across an anime dragonborn without a clan name they have usually been exiled for a serious crime committed against the clan.

Ability Score Increase. Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Charisma score increases by 1 or your ability score increases can depend on your draconic heritage.
Age. Young anime dragonborn grow quickly. They walk hours after hatching, attain the size and development of a 10-year-old human child by the age of 3, and reach adulthood by 15. They live to be around 750 years old.
Alignment. Anime Dragonborn tend to extremes, making a conscious choice for one side or the other in the cosmic war between good and evil. Most dragonborn are good, but those who side with evil can be terrible villains.
Size. Anime Dragonborn are about the same height as most humans, standing between 5 to 6 feet tall and averaging almost 195 pounds. Your size is Medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Draconic skin. You have tough skin. When you aren't wearing armor, your AC is 13 plus your Constitution modifier plus your Dexterity modifier. You can use your natural armor to determine your AC if the armor you wear would leave you with a lower AC. A shield's benefits apply as normal while you use your natural armor.
Keen Senses. You have proficiency in the Perception skill.
Breath Weapon. You can use your bonus action to exhale destructive energy. Your draconic ancestry determines the size, shape, and damage type of the exhalation.

Your breath weapon has a limited number of uses. This limit is determined by your Constitution modifier. You only regain one charge of your breath weapon each time you finish a short or long rest.

When you use your breath weapon, each creature in the area of the exhalation must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by your draconic ancestry. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d6 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d6 at 5th level, 4d6 at 11th level, and 5d6 at 18th level.
Damage Resistance. You have resistance to the damage type associated with your draconic ancestry.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and Draconic. Draconic is thought to be one of the oldest languages and is often used in the study of magic. The language sounds harsh to most other creatures and includes numerous hard consonants and sibilants.
Subrace. You have draconic ancestry. Choose one type of dragon from the draconic ancestry table. Your breath weapon and damage resistance are determined by the dragon type. You can also use the additional draconic ancestry options for more variety as shown in the tables below.

gollark: I sometimes use JS, but arguably this is worse.
gollark: Due to the great success of ABR's event bus, I'm implementing a vaguely similar thing for entirely unrelated reasons in RSAPI.
gollark: Using "event bus" technology, and "actual modules", and oh look ABR just DMed me?
gollark: I have tried a *lot* to debug it, and it failed, so I'm just throwing it out and rewriting it more nicely.
gollark: I mean, it mostly does, but the OIR frontend repeatedly does bees.
