Angus was born on an off-planet colony. His parents, who were both UAC employees, were taking him on a shuttle back to Earth when they were boarded by a pirate vessel, the Red Star. The crew killed everyone on the shuttle except Angus and his parents, and he was left there.

An hour later, the crew of the Black Hind boarded the ship, hoping to scavenge anything left behind. One of the crew found Angus, and she took him back to the ship. Angus grew up there.

Present Day

Stafford was a technician on a pirate ship, the Black Hind operating near the mining colony Tei Tenga, out in the Kupier belt.

His crew had captured a shuttle, the Sparrowhawk, bound for Saturn. It had been disabled, and its crew dispatched in the lifeboat. Stafford was on its exterior, tethering the two ships together, when the Sparrowhawk somehow engaged its engines again. He was just able to enter its airlock before the cable sliced into into him. The Black Hind suffered some damage from the whipping tether.

Stafford tried gaining control of the shuttle, to no avail. Forced to be a passenger, all he could do wait. The Black Hind eventually resumed its pursuit, but was now two days behind.

During the trip, Stafford accessed the ship's manifest. For some reason, the hold only contained one shipping crate, designated "unknown artifact", stored behind an inaccessible bulkhead.

This information he radioed back to his captain on the Black Hind, who continued their pursuit, cons

The shuttle automatically docked at Pallas station on Titan, whereupon it was unavoidable that Stafford be arrested.

The station security team held him in a cell, and then was seemingly abandoned. A day went by, no-one checked on him or brought him food. Anther day went by. No-one responded to his shouts. His sleep was wracked with nightmares. During the third day, he heard muffled gunfire. The lights constantly flickered. He fell in and out of sleep, stomach knotted with hunger. Then he awoke, and the cell door was open.

gollark: But the brain runs on not-very-persistent storage, and if you're "dead" too long some kind of cascade failure thing means you're stuck that way.
gollark: Biology: it's very weird and extremely complex.
gollark: Medicine is just very bodgey and unreliable hacky patches to the spaghetti code of life.
gollark: > as bad as it is to say, most of the deaths are people that are only alive from medicine artificially inflating life spans well beyond the designed parameters... is wanting to live longer a bad thing now? There are no "designed parameters" with humans, what with us being weird evolved systems, only "mostly works" ones, and we've been continually pushing those with stuff like, well, medicine.
gollark: The mortality rate of coronavirus is significantly higher than 1% or 2% or whatever if healthcare stuff gets overloaded. Which could happen, and I think is kind of in Italy.
