Top Gear (2016)

The 2016 incarnation of Top Gear began after the 2002 version's cast left to create The Grand Tour. Out an iconic and well loved cast, the BBC gathered Chris Evans (the British one), Matt LeBlanc (Joey on Friends), Rory Reid (Presenter on YouTube series Fast, Furious & Funny and token black), Sabine Schmitz (A German racing driver and token female), Chris Harris (an automotive journalist) and Eddie Jordan (Formula One team member turned commentator) to host the new show.

Tropes used in Top Gear (2016) include:
  • Breakout Character/Demoted To Extra: Chris Evans was originally the lead, but poor reception and an inability to talk and drive (which is crippling for a car show host) led to his presence being drastically reduced in favor of Matt leBlanc and Chris Harris who were better received. Then Chris Evans quit the show entirely following allegations of sexual harassment.
  • Five-Token Band: An explicit aim of the BBC execs.
  • Loads and Loads of Characters: In contrast to the 2002 version's very tight knit cast of 3 men and The Stig, the 2016 version uses a large "diverse" cast that doesn't really interact all that much.
