The Stoneheart Trilogy/Characters
The characters of The Stoneheart Trilogy:
George Chapman
I just want this all to be over. I just want to go home.
George is a twelve year old boy whose small act of breaking the head of a stone dragon causes the statues of London to begin to awaken once more.
- Beware the Nice Ones
- Fish Out of Water / Naive Newcomer: To the "un-London."
- The Hero
- I Choose to Stay: In the end of Stoneheart, George chooses to not return the dragon head and instead stay in the un-London where living statues can be seen so that Edie won't be alone.
- Ineffectual Loner
- Kid Hero
- Lonely Rich Kid: Quite possibly. Lampshaded twice by Edie.
- Loser Archetype: Which is why all George wants in the beginning of the story is to just belong and fit in.
- Nice Guy
- Non-Action Guy
- Only Sane Man: George initially feels like this.
- Parental Abandonment: His father had passed away prior to the story, and his mother is an actress and is often gone on long periods of time working.
- The Protagonist
- Refusal of the Call: At first.
- Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: George and the Gunner.
- She Is Not My Girlfriend:
Sphinx: Then you won't get an answer; and you can go away and take your glint with you.
George: She's not my glint.
Sphinx: You can take her anyway.
- Vitriolic Best Buds: With Edie.
- What the Hell, Hero?: Edie delivers one to George when she reveals how the Gunner sacrificed his life to save George from the dragon, while George decided to go home and leave the Gunner and Edie behind.
Edie Laemmel
Don't be sorry for me. Don't treat me like I'm soft. And don't like me.
A stubborn girl who is George's age and also sees the statues, Edie is a glint -- a being that often brings bad luck and can witness the past.
- Action Survivor
- Badass Longcoat
- Brainy Brunette: Seemingly.
- Broken Bird / Dark and Troubled Past: It is implied that a man with a knife -- possibly her father -- had chased her out through the beach trying to harm her, and she -- again possibly -- ended up killing the man in order to escape.
- Brown Eyes: Though, almost deep enough to be seen as Black Eyes.
- The Chew Toy: Treated like she's a nuisance because she's a glint, and they are considered to often bring bad luck.
- Curtains Match the Window
- Defrosting Ice Queen
- Disappeared Dad
- Damsel in Distress: When Edie gets captured by the Minotaur.
- Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Enough to slap George when he tries to apologize to her.
- Dynamic Entry: Hastily leaving the double-decker bus by biting the conductor between the thumb and forefinger of his hand.
- Exact Eavesdropping: She definitely gets good at this, often following George and the Gunner around and appearing behind them.
- Heroic BSOD: Three times -- seeing a girl getting drowned while glinting in the Thames, when she gets attacked by the Grid Man, and when she gets captured by the Minotaur. All events leave her shaken, silent, and visibly pale.
- Hot-Blooded: Has quite the temper, and she's very aware of it.
- Insult Backfire:
Sphinx: You have a very suspicious mind, little girl.
Edie: Thank you.
- Kid Heroine
- Kuudere / Tsundere
- Last of Her Kind
- Little Miss Snarker
- The Load: This is what the Gunner initially sees Edie as because she is a glint.
- Monochromatic Eyes: According to George, Edie's eyes are "as deep brown can get before it becomes black." This is unsettling for him because it's difficult to distinguish where her irises are. It even makes him wonder if Edie's irises are filled with hate.
- Memento MacGuffin / Mineral MacGuffin: Her sea-glass. It is first provided as a warning for when danger is nearby, but is later revealed to be Edie's own heart stone as a glint and is essential to who she is.
- Mystical Waif
- Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette
- Plucky Girl
- The Runaway: Possibly Type 2 and 3.
- Strange Girl
- Vitriolic Best Buds: With George.
- Woman in White: Her sheepskin Badass Longcoat.
- The Woobie
Jagger (The Gunner)
I'm not paid to miss. I'm the Gunner.
The Gunner is a statue of a bronze soldier and a spit. He takes George under his wing and attempts to help him stop the taints that are trying to murder him.
- Always Save the Girl: The Gunner risks breaking his oath to the Walker in order to rescue Edie from the Minotaur by saving one last bullet in spite of promising to fight the Minotaur weaponless.
- Ambiguously Brown
- Big Damn Heroes
- Cheshire Cat Grin: Quite a bit when George and the Gunner first meet Edie and is confronted by her, which got on Edie's nerves.
- Dynamic Entry: Rescuing George from the stone pterodactyl and salamanders.
- Exactly What It Says on the Tin
- Gray Eyes
- Heroic Sacrifice: Sacrificed himself to protect both George and Edie from the dragon statue.
- The Gunslinger
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: The Gunner is quick to insult and push away Edie because of her status as a glint, but when push comes to shove, he ends up rescuing her during the fight with the dragon statue.
- Mr. Exposition: Pretty much is around to explain everything to George and to help him stay alive along the way.
- The Mentor: To George and later Edie.
- Papa Wolf: Becomes a bit of one towards George and Edie.
- Pet the Dog: When the Gunner starts calling Edie by her name instead of calling her "that glint" or "her."
- Protectorate: George and Edie.
- Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: George and the Gunner.
- Smoking Is Cool
The Walker
No, it's not. Not for you. Nothing is ever going to be okay.
The antagonist of the story who desires the Heart Stone.
