- The Chosen One: Played straight in that, he's one of three vampires who are allowed to kill the Vampaneze Lord. Subverted in that he was chosen to destroy the world, should he, or the other two succed in doing so.

- Take a Third Option: Mr. Tiny's plan was that either Darren or Steve would become the destroyer of the world, whichever survived/killed the other. It backfired on him, when Darren realised that only means both of them must die at each others hands.
- Teacher-Student Romance: With Debbie.
- Took a Level In Badass: He took at least one in each trilogy.
- Unwitting Pawn: To Mr. Tiny trough the entire series. Then he subverts it, by literally saying Screw Destiny to him.

- Badass Cape: He wears a red cape.
- Badass Teacher: To Darren.
- Breakout Character: He has his own series of four novels.
- Dual-Wielding: His prefered fighting style with knives.
