The Retelling of Pokémon Colosseum

The Retelling of Pokémon Colosseum (alternate link) is a comedy fan-fiction by bobandbill which explains some of the events of the game in a fun way, and expands on character's backgrounds.

Tropes used in The Retelling of Pokémon Colosseum include:

Announcer at Pyrite city stadium: Next up is... Hoks? What kind of a name is that?

Gonzap: Very smart, Wes. You've destroyed our main snag machine, and stolen the other one. You took our zoomer. And to boot, you used those explosives we had been planning to use as well to utterly destroy our base. AND half of my moustache has burnt off, and I don't have any eyebrows anymore. You'll pay for this.

  • Ascended Extra: "Tom" is based off a nameless NPC in the Pyrite Colosseum registration area.
  • Attention Deficit Ooh Shiny: Bluno is very easily distracted. Umbreon has a few moments like this as well.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Umbreon did this in a recent chapter. A reporter did this as well. Also, several references are made to a Pokemon Colosseum Strategy Guide.
  • Caffeine Bullet Time: Subverted; Yanma doesn't actually get his coffee beforehand, but is able to obliterate Dakim's Camerupt in hyperspeed on the promise of coffee as a reward. Yanma is in a perpetual caffeine high, anyway.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Many of the characters, both human and Pokemon qualify.
    • Prominent examples include Rui, Umbreon, and Tom.
  • Comically Missing the Point:

Wes: He [Entei] avoided the ground completely when he fell off of that platform – if that Poke Ball didn't hit though he'd have gone...
Espeon: Esp. (SPLAT.)
Umbreon: Umbreon! Umbre... (And he has a handlebar moustache! I wish I had one...)

  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: Ein certainly has some unique ways to turn a Pokemon shadow.
    • Also, what happens to someone who breaks Orre's "double battles only" law.
  • Dance Battler: Miror B., just like in the source material. However, here he has a special hypnotic music player that forces everyone else to dance as well.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: "Or the failed attempt to get the Time Flute. Which failed."
  • Did Not Do the Research: A minor case, but Mayor Es Cade is referred to as being mayor of the whole Orre region. He's only the mayor of Phenac City, and the whole Orre region has a governor, not mayor.
    • The author addressed this in the next chapter.
    • Another minor case is having one of Folly's Whismur one of the two that previously battled Wes, as it said 'not you guys again' to Umbreon and Espeon, but it's a different one because it's a male, while the two Whismur's that battled Wes the first time were female.
      • Genders of opposing Pokemon have been known to switch despite the Pokemon being the same in the Genius Sonority games because they're randomised if they are not snaggable (e.g. Zook's Zangoose in XD can change gender between the first battle and the second when it is snaggable, but clearly Zook does not have two shadow Zangoose). The Whismur would not have pre-defined genders so it's a matter of chance of what gender they have - so the same one being in both battles is perfectly possible if it appeared that way for the author. (And as the battle in the story was breezed over, maybe a third Whismur had been sent out after the first two?) Bit too nitpicky there.
  • Distracted By the Shiny: Wes is so distracted by the battle with Miror B, he forgets why he came there in the first place. (To save Plusle.)
  • The Ditz: Jimmy. Sometimes Johnson as well.
  • Do Not Taunt Cthulhu: Duncan gets angry at Entei for standing on his lawn, and pokes it with a rake. It burns the rake and his lawn in retaliation.
  • Dumb Muscle: Dakim
  • Efficient Displacement: Dakim creates one in Nascour's office when he obliviously leaves by walking through the wall.
  • Epic Fail: At one point while trying to capture Entei, Entei just burns the snag ball thrown and when the ashes hit the ground they actually spell out "FAIL".
  • Flanderization: A positive example; Johnson's idiocy is Turned Up to Eleven, and because of one scene in the game where Dakim punches Vander, Dakim has been transformed into a Captain Falcon Expy
    • DAKIM PAWNCH!!!
  • Funny Afro: Miror B, duh. There's an amusing moment in one chapter when Miror B tries to throw an item away, only for it to collide with and sink into his afro.
    • Happens again with a crumpled piece of paper Nascour throws at him.
    • And he can even produce an umbrella and maracas out of it!
  • Genki Girl: Rui.
  • Go Look At the Distraction: Hey, is that a Gym Leader?
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Es Cade puts out an arrest order on Wes after the Mt. Battle incident. Thankfully, Johnson is sent to arrest him and manages to spill to him everything. After that, it's a simple matter of "correcting" Johnson about his orders and escaping to The Under.
  • Idiot Savant: For a complete moron whose best Pokemon is a Magikarp, Johnson sure does know a lot about battle mechanics and EV Training. Not that it's of much use to him...
  • Improbable Weapon User: Dakim uses a cactus.
  • Invincible Incompetent: Johnson. Averted when he walks through a fence apparently made completely of lasers, only for it to be shown to only look like it is. Played straight when his Magikarp dodges almost every attack thrown at it.
  • Lampshade Hanging
  • Loud of War: Miror B. does this several times, to varying effect...
  • Must Have Caffeine: Yanma. Apparently, this is because of a coffee-like formula Ein used on Yanma when making him into a Shadow Pokemon.
  • Non Sequitur Thud: Tom has a tendency to utter these, Rui also delivers one after Wes releases her from the bag:

Rui: MY NAME IS ROMARIO AND I LIKE CHOCOLATE PIE!

  • Only Sane Man: Wes and Espeon, Sherles probably counts as well.
  • Parental Abandonment: Wes is an orphan.
  • Punch Clock Villain: Miror B, and, to a lesser extent, Dakim.
  • Punny Name: Phillar Caractor and Enpea Sea.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Makuhita is the red oni to Croconaw's blue oni.
  • Running Gag: Random references to various pastries. Also, DISHWASHERS!
  • Shout-Out: In Chapter 17, a reporter throws an apple at Quagsire before taking its photo, claiming that's how they were taught to take pictures of Pokemon
    • Dakim's Golem goes through the Black Knight routine, and his Metang makes several competitive battling references, as well as one quick Portal reference before it faints.
    • One chapter referenced YouTube Poop, with the Relic Stone being claimed to double as a football.
    • Johnson at one point mistakenly refers to Trudly and Folly as George and Fred.
    • Makuhita fights for his friends.
    • The truth serum mentioned in chapter six has the same side-effect as eating a Glowstem from Pikmin: uncontrollable episodes of impromptu break dancing.
    • One unfortunate Magnemite shouts out "I am error!" as it gets KO'd.
    • Dakim, while lecturing several Cipher office workers, makes a reference to Team Fortress 2. Specifically, to the Meet the Soldier video.
  • Sidekick Ex Machina: Espeon becomes this for a while after gaining a way to really mess with people's heads. He loses permission to do this after the Miror B. battle, however.
  • Sixth Ranger Traitor: As revealed in Chapter 17, Miror B. is working against Cipher from within, and has recruited Skrub to his cause.
  • Surrogate Soliloquy: Many times, but mainly for the comedic effect of a character assuming an inanimate object can talk. Johnson has tried questioning a statue and a pebble, and several reporters tried to interview a sandstorm.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Makuhita. DEFINITELY Makuhita.
  • Trademark Favourite Food: Plusle really likes potatoes. Also, Umbreon seems to have a fondness for bacon.
    • Not quite a food, but Yanma loves coffeecoffeecoffee!
  • Understatement: Wes, upon seeing Mirakle B.'s room-filling collection of Miror B. merchandise, gives us this gem:
  • We Have To Go Buy A Dishwasher
  • Welcome to Corneria: The NPCs in the Phenac Pokemon Center, very much so.
  • Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?: Miror B. reveals that his parents wanted to name him "Mirror", with his last name being "Ball", however, a spelling error rendered it as "Miror" and shortened the last name to "B" and it never got corrected. When Wes and Rui ask why his parents would name him that in the first place, he replies that he is not sure.
  • Worthy Opponent: How Dakim thinks of Wes.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: At least two instances of characters with odd hair colours have been lampshaded, first there's Willie who claims that his pink hair is the result of someone's Kecleon freaking out at the hairdresser and spilling the pink hair dye in his hair and he's stuck with it until it fades out because it won't wash out. Then there's Miror B. who reveals that his hair colour is actually natural and he decided to make the best of it by growing an afro.
