The Dreamstone/Characters
A guide to the residents of the Sleeping World in The Dreamstone.
The Land Of Dreams
The Dreammaker
Wise head council of Dreammakers, responsible for sending dreams within the sleeping world.
- Dream Weaver: The Dreammaker is a positive example.
- Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep"
- The Messiah
- Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: The Dreammaker has a rather advanced dictionary at times, and unlike Blob, seems to get it right (...we think...).
Albert
The Dreammaker's loyal dogfish. Brought to life from a dream, Albert swims in the air and has the general mannerisms of a normal dog.
- Big Friendly Dogfish: Very "boisterous" as the Dreammaker puts it, but very friendly overall.
- Angry Guard Dogfish: He is merciless to the Urpneys when they try to intrude however.
- Evil Detecting Dogfish: Sometimes able to see through the villains' plans.
- Silent Snarker
Rufus
Young assistant of the Dreammaker. Clumsy and not to bright but often relied on to protect the stone when the Urpneys attack.
- Adorkable: Rather oafish and spacey at times (especially in the pilot).
- Dork Knight: Balanced by being a much more competant hero in the first handful of episodes.
- Characterization Marches On: In the pilot Rufus was played more as the main protagonist of the show. He is also played as a much more clownish, downtrodden figure, almost a Good Counterpart to the Urpneys. In most later episodes, Rufus is downplayed into a Hero Antagonist and toned down into a cutesier and far less introverted character.
- Cheerful Child
- Cloudcuckoolander: In the pilot, Rufus has a more spacey and eccentric personality, bursting into hammy dialogue or dancing and humming to himself, in addition to his constant daydreaming. This is diluted for the rest of the series, though still appears every now and then.
- Flat Character / The Everyman: Half the time, due to playing a Hero Antagonist role, Rufus is downplayed heavily. The aforementioned changes to his personality didn't help in this regard.
- The Fool: Not as prominent early on, when Rufus is far more of Butt Monkey and worked more competantly against the odds. By the second season however, immense luck seems to be the only thing preventing him from being more pitiful than the Urpneys.
- Hero Antagonist: A lot less Sympathetic POV is given to Rufus in a lot of episodes, in favor of making the Urpneys Villain Protagonists. It varies from episode to episode however (in the pilot he is in fact the main protagonist).
- Heroes Prefer Swords: Wears a sword on his belt in the first season, {{The Goggles Do Nothing which remains there unused}} outside the first two episodes. It disappears altogether in later episodes.
- Idiot Ball: A lot of times, the Dreamstone got stolen due to his carelessness with it, either disobeying an order from the Dream Maker or cluelessly leaving it in harm's way.
- Invincible Incompetent: Usually relied on luck or the Urpneys' bumbling to save the stone. Subverted in earlier episodes, where he leans more as a Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass.
- The Klutz: Not nearly as much as the Urpneys, but it's definitely there at times.
- Mr. Imagination: Pretty much Rufus' defining trait in the pilot, and the key reason he searched for employment from the Dream Maker. Oddly only appears in a handful of episodes later.
- Non-Action Guy: Most of the time, he has Badass Normal moments in early episodes however.
- Tastes Like Diabetes.
- The Meddling Kids Are Useless: Starting from the second season, Rufus became rather ineffective in stopping the Urpneys, usually relying on dumb luck or his more competant peers sorting things out Despite the Plan.
- What Could Have Been: Rufus was originally designed to be the main protagonist when the Urpneys were still planned as minor comic relief. Also when the show's concept was still planned as a Darker and Edgier novel, Rufus was originally going to be prophecised as a hero by the Dreammaker.
Amberley
Best friend of Rufus and fellow child assistant to the Dreammaker. Somewhat more level headed than Rufus, though equally boisterous.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Rather friendly and cheerful, but can be rather violent when angered. The Urpneys learnt that the hard way.
- Characterization Marches On: Similar to Rufus, Amberley was a much more comical and cynical character in the pilot. Also while still displaying Cheerful Child traits in early episodes, she had a more defining temper, and on occasion could be rather shrill, haughty and sarcastic (usually with Rufus' bumbling as a trigger). Much like Rufus she is made much more innocent and less abrasive in later episodes, her catty moments being much more rare.
- Cheerful Child
- Bratty Half-Pint: But with moments of this early on.
- Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Started off as this early on due to Rufus' dizzier personality. This is toned down after Rufus becomes more stable, though she still occasionally plays The Straight Man of the two.
- Damsel in Distress: Seems to be the most frequently captured of the hero cast.
- Faux Action Girl: Though she can throw a mean punch, it usually doesn't stop her getting captured.
- Fiery Redhead: Though usually rather level headed and cheerful, has intense moments of this at times. She is noticably moodier in some earlier episodes.
- Flat Character / The Everygirl: Depending on the Writer (see Rufus example).
- The Fool: While Amberley was slightly more competent than Rufus at times, she played this up to the same length most of the time.
- Hero Antagonist: Again, with varying lengths from episode to episode.
- Invincible Incompetent
- Little Miss Snarker: Has her moments, especially early on.
- Plucky Girl
- Tastes Like Diabetes
- The Meddling Kids Are Useless: Pretty much the same as Rufus (though she had more minimal effective moments to begin with).
- What Could Have Been: Amberley in early design plans was to be a stranger Rufus meets in his travels, she also seemed to have possession of the Daydream Bubbles, which were instead created by the Dream Maker in the final show.
- Women Are Wiser: Sort of; she is noticably more level headed than Rufus, but still rather bumbling, and much more tempremental at times. In some episodes she is little more than a Distaff Counterpart of him.
Pildit
Leader of the Wuts, who guard the Land Of Dreams. Usually mellow but intelligent and powerful in magic.
- Nice Guy
- The Spock: Not a lot fazes Pildit, who is usually narrowly focused on his tasks and rather mellow and matter of fact about everything.
Pildit: Well...that was interesting...
Wildit
Pildit's somewhat hyperactive grandmother. Also one of the most competant of the Wuts.
- Cloudcuckoolander: She's one of the dizzier heroes.
- Crazy Awesome: It seems to play into her being one of the more efficient as well.
- Large Ham
- Never Mess with Granny
- Auntie Bear: To Spildit.
Spildit
Wildit's playful niece.
- Cheerful Child: Albeit with frequent Bratty Half-Pint moments.
- Go-Karting with Bowser: Spildit frequently alternates between threatening to bash in the Urpneys and offering a picnic for them.
- Plucky Girl
Viltheed
Zordrak
Ruthless ruler of Viltheed who will stop at nothing to steal the Dreamstone and disperse nightmares to the Sleeping World. Has a noticeably unpredictable temper, which is often lashed out on his minions.
- Bad Boss: Zordrak has three primary punishments for his minions. 1: Turning them into stone. 2: As before, then throwing them into the watery pit filled with Extreme Omnivore crocodile/wasp/crab/things. 3: Throwing them to the aforementioned carnivorous horrors while still alive. We actually see him do method three in the pilot, though of course there's a Gory Discretion Shot. Even when he doesn't kill them, Zordrak is not a kind master to labor under.
- Pragmatic Villainy: While Zordrak seemed to exterminate mooks at whim in early episodes, when Urpgor later encourages him to do the same to Blob, he declines, coming to find the method as ineffective and "a waste of a perfectly servicable Urpney". Not that he won't frequently find other less lethal ways to punish his mooks however.
- Big Bad
- The Comically Serious: Though rather intimidating, his role in the show largely consists of banter with his minions, a lot of which is pretty funny.
- Determinator: He really wants the Dreamstone.
- Hair-Trigger Temper: Zordrak can switch between reserved and stoic to earth shattering rage at the blink of an eye. Granted neither are particularly welcoming to his minions.
- Knight of Cerebus: Though not without his own comical moments, is a far more sinister and intimidating villain than his minions by miles, usually the odd occasion he has active involvement in a plan is indication things are going to get a bit more serious.
- Large Ham: And how.
- Vile Villain Saccharine Show: Zordrak is a pretty creepy villain, even when not compared to a highly cutesy Noops.
- What Could Have Been: Zordrak's production name was Nasta Shelfim, an anagram for "Satan Himself". Producers feared the religious undertones and had it changed.
Urpgor
Psychotic Mad Scientist and loyal right hand minion to Zordrak (at least when the time fits). Creates the many inventions the Urpneys use to attack the Land Of Dreams and steal the Dreamstone.
- Breakout Character: In the first season, Urpgor's role was somewhat minor and more as a Satellite Character for the Urpneys. Later on he gains a more active role and is often as much a Villain Protagonist as Blob, Frizz and Nug (naturally this also begins his ascension as The Chew Toy).
- Characterization Marches On: In early episodes, Urpgor was more decrepit and even more manic (like a traditional Igor), he also seemed to be more on the winning end of his war with Blob's team, his implied favoritism from Zordrak seeming to be true. From the very start of the second season however, Urpgor starts gaining more Sympathetic POV, from which his personality becomes more lucid and cynical and he is revealed to be even more of a Butt Monkey to his master than the others.
- The Chew Toy
- Cloudcuckoolander: To extremes.
- Co-Dragons: Of the rivalistic sort alongside Sgt Blob to Zordrak.
- Comedic Sociopath: Enjoys torturing Blob and his men, actually thrives on the idea Zordrak will do to them what he did to their predecesor.
- Gadgeteer Genius: As buffoonish as he is, most of his inventions are very intricate and work exactly as are intended. It often more their mishandling by him or Blob's team that is their downfall.
- The Igor: Obviously, with a name like that.
- Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain
- Iron Butt Monkey
- Mad Scientist
- Middle Management Mook: Seems to be given a higher position than most of Zordrak's mooks. As a result he sees himself as superior to the other Urpneys, constantly giving orders or abusing them. All the while he is usually just as incompetant and spends the majority of spare time from making gadgets acting as Zordrak's favorite punching bag.
- Psycho Supporter: To Zordrak, when not trying to usurp his throne for himself anyway.
- Small Name, Big Ego: Equally bumbling as the rest of the Urpneys, but highly narcisstic, being "the flower of Urpney inteligence" and all.
- Verbal Tic: Often lets out a big slobbery rasp after finishing a sentence.
- Villain Protagonist
Sgt Blob
Gung ho but dillusional military leader of the Urpneys (promoted after the previous leader was fed to the Frazznats).
- Affably Evil: Sgt Blob is far more scheming and willingly devoted to Zordrak than most of the other Urpneys, though that's still not saying very much.
- The Blind Leading the Blind: Pretty much sums up his leadership skills.
- The Chew Toy
- Cloudcuckoolander: Not as much as Urpgor, but definitely not all there.
- Co-Dragons: To Zordrak alongside Urpgor (usually rivaling each other for their master's approval).
- Delusions of Eloquence: Blob's Malaproper tendencies are most obvious when he's trying to sound intellectual and/or authoritative.
- Drill Sergeant Nasty: Sgt Blob plays with this, for the large part he has all the key traits of one and frequently drives the other Urpneys mad as a result, but it is presented in a harmless slapstick manner and he does frequently convey a genuine camaraderie towards his cadets.
- Fearless Fool: Blob plays with this, while he does have a cowardly streak, he seems to Know When to Fold'Em a lot less often than Frizz and Nug.
- Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain
- Iron Butt Monkey
- Malaproper: In addition to his 'eavily haccented speech, Blob's dialogue is rife with malapropisms.
- Miles Gloriosus: Has moments of this. He is braver than most other Urpneys, though that's not saying a lot.
- Mook Lieutenant
- Sanity Ball: Though usually an overzealous buffoon, he can often play an Only Sane Man to his completely unthreatening comrades. There are also a handful of occasions he is a surprisingly cunning villain.
- Villain Protagonist
Corp Frizz
Neurotic member of Blob's "elite squad". Constantly moaning or suffering breakdowns from the abuse of missions.
- Character Exaggeration: Part of his Divergent Character Evolution. Was intially a dim witted Cowardly Sidekick almost interchangeable with Nug. As the first season progresses he becomes slightly more intelligent, but much more neurotic and cynical. Also, in the first season he wore glasses.
- The Chew Toy
- Cowardly Sidekick: To Sgt Blob.
- Deadpan Snarker: A trait which usually provides each episode's closing line.
- Genre Savvy: Often notices and predicts the follies in the teams' schemes, fails to be Dangerously Genre Savvy since he rarely manages to do anything about it.
- Iron Butt Monkey
- Lovable Coward: The fact he is a villain does not seem to affect this at all.
- Minion with an F In Evil
- Nervous Wreck: Most Urpneys are cowardly, Frizz however takes the cake.
Corp Nug
Other member of Blob's squad. Somewhat more upbeat than Frizz, but even more brainless.
- Character Exaggeration: Again, part of his Divergent Character Evolution from Frizz, however instead Nug had his dopey traits exaggerated, becoming more jovial and dimwitted.
- The Chew Toy
- Cowardly Sidekick: Again to Sgt Blob.
- Deadpan Snarker
- The Ditz
- Genre Savvy: Similar to Frizz. He also has a somewhat creepier savviness concerning the grim potential fates any of their blunders could leave them.
- Iron Butt Monkey
- Lovable Coward: Not as much as Frizz but certainly has his moments.
- Minion with an F In Evil
- Nightmare Fuel Station Attendant: Nug is an in-universe supplier of Fridge Horror, often inadvertantly scaring Frizz stiff with his unsettling predictions of the terrible situations they end up in.
Frizz: I'm gonna fall!!!
Nug: If you did, you'd probably break every bone in your body...probably.
- Sanity Ball: Nug isn't all that bright but he does show good observation of his comrades' bumbling at times and like Frizz can often anticipate something bad coming their way.
