Sonic X/YMMV
- Alas, Poor Scrappy: Whether or not you hated Cosmo it's hard not to feel sorry for her when she pulls her Heroic Sacrifice.
- Ass Pull: The justification and execution of why Sonic and company had to go home at the end of the second season was... rather poorly written. Chris's damning lack of judgement in that episode does a very good job of distracting the audience from the gaping plot holes, however.
- Awesome Music:
- In the original Japanese version, anyway. What do you expect from something in the Sonic franchise?
- Even some fans who hate the dub admit the theme song is pretty cool at least...and catchy.
- Creator's Pet:
- Chris Thorndyke, disliked by many fans, yet appears in 99% of the episodes.
- It gets somewhat better later on in the series, but in the first series Chris gets considerably more screen time than the title character, which greatly contributed to fans' dislike of him.
- Ear Worm: "Gotta go faster, faster, faster-faster-faster!"
- Ensemble Darkhorse:
- Bokkun.
- Cosmo, to the fans who don't consider her a Mary Sue.
- Dark Super Sonic, to a ridiculous extent.
- Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Sonic X was cancelled in Japan after the first two seasons, even though all of the season three episodes were already completed, voiced and scored. However, its popularity in America has allowed the third season to be dubbed and aired. The Japanese versions of the third seasons episodes have managed to make their way online, however.
- Growing the Beard: It didn't occur that much, but the Metarex season was somewhat better because they expanded on the actual main characters, whereas most of the first seasons Chris stole the show from the main characters. In the Metarex arc even he became less annoying.
- Les Yay: All the time between Topaz and Rouge - the crown jewel of the lot being the scene where Topaz buys her a diamond ring, with Topaz acting very awkwardly and Rouge, naturally, never dropping her overly husky voice. Among the many past radar-getting hijinks Rouge is involved with.
- Magnificent Bastard: Luke/Lucas/Dark Oak. His objective to turn the entire universe into one with peace and tranquility and devoid of flesh and blood so that plants can rule is motivated by his love for Hertia/Earthia. Even though he acts like a monster sometimes, deep down, he's rarely cruel and is actually troubled by his past. His smooth operations mainly involve collecting the Planet Eggs as well as the seven Chaos Emeralds, and for good reasons. In the end, following Cosmo's Heroic Sacrifice, he reforms and finally realizes the errors of his ways, and happily departs for the afterlife alongside a vision of Hertia.
- Memetic Mutation:
- Junichi Kanemaru dropping a shit! in the Japanese pilot.
- SHUT UP!
- The phrase "Gotta go fast!" from the English intro is used all the time you have no IDEA.
- Moment of Awesome: Has a section.
- Moral Event Horizon: Black Narcissus shows that he truly crosses the line when he captures and tortures Chris and Cosmo and uses them as bait to have the Metarex prototypes Silver and Gold test Sonic's speed, strength, and skills. This moment is what triggered Sonic's Unstoppable Rage and Super-Powered Evil Side transformation, and this action was just enough for Narcissus to cross the horizon itself. Good thing Eggman and his followers came to help calm things down -- after all, Even Evil Has Standards.
Dr. Eggman: (to Black Narcissus) It's one thing to take them prisoner and threaten them but when you actually hurt somebody, that's going too far.
- In the dub at least. In the original japanese version, Eggman was still as cold and ruthless as before, barely tolerating the allegiance with Sonic and still working to manipulate both sides to fulfill his own desires.
- Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Chris somewhat in the Metarex arc.
- The Scrappy:
- Hmmmm, now who could it be? Oh yeah, it's Chris Thorndyke.
- And Cosmo, to some fans. Especially Tails and Cream shippers.
- Sympathetic Sue: Chris Thorndyke, again. One of the most well off and immensely privileged characters, acts like and is treated like the opposite.
- Take That, Scrappy!: Eggman delivers an awesome one to Chris in episode 49. He lies on purpose about his involvement in the time freezing issue just to see Chris' reaction to his admittance in order to gauge his selfishness. Then when Chris starts bitching about being lied to when Eggman admits that he was lying just to see said reaction, Eggman starts delivering the home truths about how he is so willing to scapegoat someone else (Him) just for the sake of having a reason to keep Sonic all to himself. Many Chris haters cheered at this verbal smackdown and it cannot be denied that this moment was one of Eggman's greatest Moments of Awesome in the entire series.
- Unpopular Popular Character: In universe, Eggman and Knuckles are both Butt Monkeys intensely jealous of Sonic's popularity. Out universe they have almost as big a fanbase as the latter (though granted this was also before the show made them 'unpopular').
- Woolseyism: While the dub is berated by fans as a Macekre for the most part, some find the pun-riddled dialog to have a So Bad It's Good quality, and the Mickey Mousing to have a debatable quality over the Japanese edit's more limited and occasionally out of sync soundtrack (the decision to omit occasional tracks taken from the games however was not taken well). Also the dub surprisingly was slightly less Anvilicious about the show's occasion Broken Aesops.
